Columbus football team dismantled in loss to South Panola

Don Rowe, Special to The Dispatch

It didn''t take the Nick Parker-led South Panola High School football team long to convince Columbus Falcons why it remains one of the most high-profile programs in the Magnolia State.

The Tigers, ranked No. 3 in this week''s Clarion-Ledger Super 10 rankings and fresh off a 34-6 dismantling of then-No. 4 Olive Branch last Friday, scored early and often against the Falcons en route to a 53-7 win here Thursday evening.

"We got beat by as good a football team as there is in the state of Mississippi," Columbus head coach Bubba Davis said. "Their winning streak may have been broken (last year by Meridian in the Class 5A title game) and they may not be the top-ranked team in the state at the moment, but they sure took it to us, that''s for sure."

Parker, a preseason Dandy Dozen pick at running back who rushed for 2,500 yards and 26 touchdowns last season, carried the ball but six times for 113 yards and scored three touchdowns - all in the first half. His first carry on the game''s initial play from scrimmage netted him 75 yards and gave the Tigers a quick 6-0 lead. He added a 14-yard touchdown run and a 9-yard score before retiring to the sidelines.

Lance Pogue, the Tigers'' third-year coach, said he rested his star running back for good reason.

"We really didn''t need him that much tonight," Pogue said. "He played as much as necessary, but I can assure you he''ll have some big opportunities down the road."

The first half script for both teams remained fairly constant - Columbus (1-6, 0-3) went three-and-out and South Panola (6-1, 3-0) responded with a touchdown.

Up 7-0 thanks to Parker''s game-opening dash and Nolan Parker''s extra point, the Tigers marched 78 yards on their second possession. A Lee Self to Nicklos Brassell pass-run play that covered 49 yards set the Tigers up at the Columbus 25. Senior Dominique Carother capped the three play drive with a 25-yard touchdown run. Parker then added his second point-after kick for a 14-0 lead with 9 minutes, 35 seconds left in the first quarter.

Moments later, a short Columbus punt set the Tigers up at the Falcons'' 29. Parker was called upon four straight times, the last of which covered 14 yards. Nolan Parker''s kick was good and the Tigers owned a 21-0 advantage with 5:55 left in the first quarter.

A South Panola fumble recovery gave the Tigers possession near midfield on their fourth possession and it took Pogue''s troops three plays to score their fourth touchdown. A 46-yard Self to Brassell strike with 2:55 left in the first quarter made it 27-0, but South Panola failed to get the extra point.

Following the Falcons'' fourth three-and-out, a Dennis Draper punt return, coupled with a Columbus penalty, gave the Tigers excellent field position at the Columbus 32, and Carother bulled his way in from 6 yards out to cap the five-play march barely two minutes into the second quarter. Parker''s kick made it 34-0.

Down five touchdowns, Columbus put together an impressive yet unproductive drive that started at its 18 but ended at the Tigers 22 on a fumble recovery by South Panola. In between, Davis'' offense picked up its initial first down of the game with a little more than nine minutes left in the second quarter. It added two more before the Tigers'' Devin Clark pounced on the loose football at the South Panola 29.

Four plays later, three of which were runs by Qyundairs Griffin that accounted for 62 yards, Parker sprinted in from 9 yards out and Nolan Parker added the point after for a 41-0 lead.

Undaunted, Columbus tallied its touchdown when sophomore Damian Baker carried four straight times for 69 yards, the last of which was good for 51 yards straight up the middle with 1:47 left before halftime. Avery Ford added the point after to account for the 41-7 halftime score.

South Panola, which had its 89-game winning streak snapped by Meridian in last year''s 5A state championship game, responded with a six-play, 57-yard march. The Falcons stopped the Tigers for the first time on a quarterback sack at the 16-yard line on the final play of the first half.

Buoyed by their defensive stand just before half, the Falcons forced the first Tigers punt of the game after the initial possession of the second half.

But the Tigers reverted back to their first-half antics on their next possession, as Self hooked up with tight end Taylor Rotenberry on a 33-yard touchdown toss to up the count to 47-7 and finish a three-play 49-yard drive with 4:02 left in the third quarter. Substitute kicker Martez Wallace''s point after was no good.

Yet another Columbus fumble set South Panola up at its 39 late in the third quarter and the Tigers put together a 19-play, 61-yard drive that took a little more than nine minutes off the clock. Johnathan Bownes grabbed scoring honors this time from 2 yards out to account for the 53-7 final.

Despite the score, Pogue said both teams had one thing in common.

"We''re young and getting better," Pogue said, "and Columbus is also a young team which is improving every week, and I''m confident coach Davis will get this program turned around here very soon."

Davis didn''t blame the loss on his squad''s youthfulness, but he said he was somewhat disappointed in the outcome.

"I was disappointed in how we played," said Davis. "We''re a better football team than we showed tonight, and this is the first game where we really didn''t play up to our capabilities. But I''ll take the blame for that and now we''re going to see if I can do a better job of coaching to help us get back on track to where we were before tonight.

"The kids and the coaches have got too much invested and they''ve worked too hard, so I know they''re disappointed in the outcome, too. Now we have to have a good week of practice and load up for our trip to DeSoto Central."

Baker paced Columbus with 101 yards rushing on 16 carries, while Randy Brown had 134 yards on seven returns.

I am glad to see that Bubba did not blame the kids this week or use that lame excuse, "we are young". Our team looked aweful. What have they been doing in practice everyday? cussing each other out? I am really disappointed at Tommy Prude and our school board for letting Phillips have free reign to mess up our football program.

Tommy, what did Phillips do to mess up our football program? What should he have done, if you don't mind me asking?

Article Comment Tommy commented at 10/10/2009 2:58:00 PM:

Well let me see, he could have kept Jones instead of strong arming him to quit which is a known tactic for our school district. They do people like that everyday. And this is common knowledge. He could have found a younger proven coach that can relate to the players of today. And better than that he could have called McCrory, Phillips calls everybody else.

This is embarassing once again. I would like to know what these coaches for Columbus actually make. If it were based on production they should should owe the school money back. They need to get rid of these clowns and find a new staff.

Article Comment columbusalum commented at 10/10/2009 5:39:00 PM:

If u only new. Head coach makes six figures. Everyone else on staff makes 70,000 r better. Now, think any money is being earned since this staff arrived. Anybody off the street can yell at the players and win one game a year. Yea, it takes lots of money to accomplish what they have!

Article Comment chs commented at 10/10/2009 6:53:00 PM:

I don't care what they make. They are not winning and that is all that matters. Wins and losses are all you are judged by. And all we accomplish is the latter of the two. Just think what the score would have been if they played their starters past the first quarter. I will never pay for another game again. We need to stop attending games and maybe the adminisration will get the picture.

Article Comment bigbubba commented at 10/10/2009 7:08:00 PM:

All they do is point fingers at one another. Head coach knows it all. Offensive coordinator thinks he can do a better job. Defensive coordinator blames everything on the offensive coordinator because he can't keep them on the field to give defensive players a breather. OVER PAID UNDER ACHIEVERS> THAY ALL NEED TO BE FIRED!

Article Comment Tommy commented at 10/10/2009 10:23:00 PM:

That sounds good. If we boycott the games from here on end, this would send a message to the adminstration. I too will stop going to the games. Will others join? I don't know about you all, but I am tired of supporting a losing program.

I heard 6 figures also, a salary that McCrory never came close to getting. I hate to endorse a boycott because the kids end up with the short end of the stick. I do think we should flood the office of the supe and principal with a million calls a day demanding a coaching change!

You are right. What are they teaching the kids. How hard is it to win "one" game a year. These coaches walk around campus like they are above the administration. Big shots equal big losers.
Kids are suffering. They deserve better. All the coaches do is scream at them and think that is the solution.

I also heard that a coach is going around saying they are no good. Why treat the kids the way u do if they are in a no win situation. You should hear the way they talk(yell) at our boys in the weight room. I need to record the language these coaches are using. Unprofessional and unacceptable is any county.

Article Comment Tom commented at 10/11/2009 10:02:00 AM:

Sonia, no one should ever be spoken to that way. Especially young impressionable kids. They need positive role models. That is the problem with sports. Al these wanna b coach's think they know it all and take it out on our boys. We actally have to take this to the appropriate people to handle these coach's accordingly.

Phillips knows about this already. Also one of the school board member's son is on the team as well as 2 of the asst. principal's sons. Again what Phillips wants Phillips get. No one cares about the kids in Columbus its all smoke and mirrors so he can get that State Superintendent job and we are falling for it.

Article Comment CHS Supporter commented at 10/11/2009 4:31:00 PM:

The more I read of the comments, the more appalled I become. I'm sure that you are all genuinely concerned, but I think your proposed actions will negatively impact Columbus and our precious young people for years.

I agree wholehearedly that Columbus supporters must support athletes and other students. How many of you volunteer your time to work with some of these athletes or other students at the high school?

Have you visited the current staff? If you have specifics that you feel need to be corrected, contact the head coach. From what I've heard, you can find him at the fieldhouse or on the field almost anytime.

Do you belong to the Booster Club and support the athletes and make them feel important? Do you know which of the athletes played well on any given night? Do you know which ones missed key opportunities and are down about it and need a little encouragement from the community?

I think we all need to examine the role we should play to improve education and athletics at CHS. Do we criticize and want to "put down" our coaches, teachers, students or players?
I've watched quite a few of CHS Football games, as well as basketball, baseball, etc. and will continue to do so. I won't withhold my support of athletes and of the coaches because "I want to show others the influence I have or the impact of not showing up to support them."

Since some of you want to know background info on the coaches, you haven't read the newspapers' sports sections over the past few years. As the computer nerd that I am, I did the research. We have more than qualified, proven coaches.

I will continue to support Columbus schools, athletes, coaches and teachers, and administration. I will not encourage others to stop coming to games and I most certainly will not carry a sign outside a football game as some type of protest. I'm sure students, teachers, coaches and administrators will want to line up to come to Columbus schools then!

I will do what I can do to encourage one student, one athlete, one coach, one teacher, one administrator--one at a time. Will you?

...or is it easier for you to get on a bandwagon of negativity and protest?

Well written Coach(chs supporter)! The only thing that you left out was that you are being paid for wins not LOSSES!! Whether we sell concessions or pick up trash after the ball games has nothing to do with the inability of our players being able to compete on the field. That is what all of you are getting paid for. Not a single person spoke a word about teachers. Stop trying to deflect your inability to win a ball game on a consistent basis and act like the community is against the entire school. While the games are being played and all of you coach's constantly yell at the boys you eventually have to do what is best and resign. It may be about paychecks for all of you but it is the kids future that we are concerned about. Save your excuses for your coach's pow wow!

Great point account101! I was waiting for the coach (chs supporter) to post a bogus comment aobut it being about the kids and getting involved. That's TRASH!! No matter how many parents and volunteers show up to booster club meetings or help "work with other athletes", the team will still be terrible. These coaches are awful. They make decisions on the field and you can go on and on all you want about taking the high road and encouraging the players but our kids are losing out (see Ex Chs Football Player's comment). When Roy McCrory was at CHS he played the best players he had regardless of grade or who they knew! It sounds like this will automatically take him out of the running for the job since the Godfather (Dr. Phillips)runs the program like the mafia. It's time for action Columbus!

I am a former coach at Columbus and worked with Bubba and the others, so I have first hand knowledge. The problem is not Bubba it is Del Phillips. Bubba is doing what he can and I liked him while I was there and thought he had them on the right track, so please don't blame Bubba he is dojng his best(I never heard Bubba cuss once, now the others is another story). The coaches are paid way too much, and while they pay these coaches so much the students suffer. Our money that we get to use in the classroom(EEF) went down when these coaches came to this school. Did they use it to pay these coaches??? I don't know but it is sad. As far as I know there are 12 coaches that get paid to help with the football team. Some of them are coaches that were friends with Paul Henry and he kept them there when Bubba came in.Others are retired teachers and coaches that bubba brought in. There is a one coach for every position, no coach helps on both sides of the ball, like in college. WAKE UP COLUMBUS, I know first hand that DEL has spent close to a million on this team that continues to lose, and while the kids at school suffer with not having supplies and textbooks that they need. I was using a textbook that had a copyright of 1995 in my classsroom, it is illegal to use a book that old, but they continue to throw money at this football team. How come DEL is scared to let us know how much these coaches make(what are their coaching stipends)??????We need to get rid of DEL and the School board, they are the problem. And I pray to GOD that he does not get the State Sup job, then the whole state will be in trouble. We need to have an elected school board and supe, make them be held accountable.

Hope the students don't ever miss the bus. Thank God for the county school system. Then he has the little children getting out before the older children, which leaves them at home alone. Real smart Phil.

In two years at CHS Coach Jones went 9-12 (75%)with a playoff appearance in his second yr

In two years at Callaway Coach Jones is 10-7 so far. 4-6 last yr and 6-1 so far this yr.

Callaway went a combined 10-20 from 2005-2007 before Coach Jones got there. With seasons of 3-7, 2-8, and 5-5

Compare that to our record. What makes Columbus so different? Are we gonna blame it on the kids again? When you do the research you see how awful this coaching staff is!

Games vs some of the best in MS
as of 10/13/09
(1)South Panola - they took a beating
Columbus 12 - (15)Noxubee 23
Columbus 6 - (5)West Point 24
Columbus 6 - (19)South Haven 14

Regular Non District Game
Columbus 27 - Aberdeen 26

District Games
Columbus 20 - Lousiville 34
Columbus 06 - Tupelo 10

This is SERIOUSLY blown out of
proportion. A LOT of teams
out there have lost to Noxubee, West Point,
and South Panola. In the other 4 really
winnable games, Columbus hasn't really
done that bad at all.

Since Columbus already has to play South
Panola and 6 other 6A schools, I would no
longer play Aberdeen, Noxubee, West Point,
or Starkville. It is pointless to play some of
the top teams in the state outside of a 6A
schedule when you are trying to rebuild.
The offense has had to line up against some of
the best defenses in the state week after week
and it shows. It would be better to play
easier teams starting out to get the offense on
track and then proceed foward.

Blown out of proportion hell we could not score on the 2 yard line. We got pushed back to the 5 and then the ball was stripped from us. We should have beaten Tupelo whose only win is against us. We would have lost to Aberdeen if their starting quarterback hadn't went down in the first quarter.

Justdoesntmatter, I am thrilled that you are no longer attending the games, because attitudes like yours certainly won't help matters. Columbus ws bad in the 80's, 90's, and 2000's. There were a few good seasons here and there, but overall it wasn't pretty.

Yes, you guys are overreacting. Not many teams would come out of this schedule with a winning record. Yes, there were some blown opportunities, but that happens.

Yes, scheduling is important. When Columbus beat Aberdeen, their coach spent most of the article talking about how they almost beat a 6A squad. When you play teams lower than your division, it is a no win situation.

Article Comment commented at 10/14/2009 1:43:00 PM:

Solution, unlike Ridiculous, your name doesn't fit your post! COLUMBUS SHOULD BEAT SCHOOLS THAT ARE SMALLER......PERIOD! COLUMBUS SHOULD BEAT SCHOOLS THAT ARE SMARTER......PERIOD!!! We are 6A for a reason...because we are in a class of schools that have the most kids to choose from! So that means smaller schools have less kids to choose from! Make all the excuses you want! This coaching staff is terrible! WINS MATTER! Look at the stats. If you look at the stats and do the research you will realize how terrible you sound when you say stuff like, "In the other 4 really
winnable games, Columbus hasn't really
done that bad at all"! Your way of thinking is exactly why we are in this position! Our schedule is the same as it has always been but the only difference is the teams on our schedules have better coaches and that's why a little school like Aberdeen can compete with us! We're twice as big and we got pushed up and down the field like we were the smaller of the two.... LOOK AT THE FACTS! The numbers don't lie! If this staff wins two games next year, will we all jump up and saying, "WOW, WE'RE REALLY MAKING PROGRESS!!"? I hope not! They must go!

Article Comment solution commented at 10/14/2009 1:54:00 PM:, you have got to be kidding me. Like I said earlier, Columbus has a HISTORY of losing. You guys act like this was some great program that went south. In reality, it is a bad program that had a few good years.

If you really look at it, the student population is 6A, but the student interest is 3A. It is easy to blame the coaches, but it is this way across the board. The test scores in the Columbus schools system are just as bad as this season has been going. If you don't believe me, look at the results online. Even though the area schools are smaller, they always seem to post higher test score averages.

So is the problem really the coaching, the team, the teachers, or the overall attitude of the community.

Sorry in the 70;s,80's,90's they were not winning. You are right. You are right by saying they are doing no better then twenty and thirty years ago. I checked my facts and realized u were correct. But back then the head coach never made 100,000 a year. Assisstant coaches never made 70,000 and 80,000 a year either. Obviously, they are no better coaches now then what they were before.. So put that in yor pipe and smoke it. These are the facts numb skull. How much money does it take to win one freaking game a year. And for test scores I guess you forgot that we live in Mississippi where we are always the lowest in test scores.

solution, could u pleeeeessssee do ur research as to what "a program going south really means"
pay attention im going to slow it down for you:
(1997) Roy's first yr- 3-7
(1998) 4-6
(1999) 7-3 defeats #1 South Panola, 1st playoff appearance in CHS history

CHS coach Jones even went 9-12 in two years and won a playoff game his second year and i think that was 2006 and 2007,

can we agree that the program has gone south with 2 one game win seasons, its not rocket science.

and i dont have to play at the bowl i am a CHS football alumni that played 4 yrs, blood, sweat and tears along with two of my brothers that left heart on that field so its safe to say that i have a lot under my belt, do YOU?

I would like all of you that are posting here to stop being jelous about what we are making. If you want to go get an education come and get my job. Obviously you do not understand how hard it is to win high school football.

with all due respect, none of this is geared towards you personally. and i would hope that you and your supporters wouldn't take it that way. but ultimately buisness is buisness, never personal.

With all due respect, the following comments are not geared towards anyone personally, and I would hope that you and your supporters wouldn't take it that way, but...

I assume Jonathan is no longer in the Army--I think there are regulations against soliciting and using official title as in letter to editor. Maybe not.

Also, I looked on the Hire Roy website. Eric using his state email address is also questionable. Wonder how the MS. Bureau of Narcotics feels about it!

WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, Legal Issues, are you for real??????. What are some of you people problems? Solution, want to have a "put up or shut up day", legal issues want to have a "let's call the calvary day". ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The subject at hand is, CHS football program.

Legal Issues,
Obviously it helps your cause to make up Army regulation. But I guess at some point I expected someone to make this personal so we could take the attention away from the real issue. Our kids deserve better and that's the truth no matter what. It's not rocket science. You lose, you go home. So, if you'd like to call my boss and report me for caring about my community, please get with me offline and I'll give you that ###. But I don't think you would be very successful though since:

A: You can't produce a letter with my name on it that says anything about the Army

B: You can't produce that regulation you're talking about!

But great attempt to divert the attention from the main point. It's about the kids!

You could care less about the kids. You've already said here that they are not going to win any more games.

Shame, shame, shame!
