McAdams shoots way past East Oktibbeha

Danny P Smith

SALLIS --┬áThe McAdams Bulldogs believe they can shoot their way to the Mississippi Coliseum and the Class A State Tournament.

They got off to a good start Thursday afternoon at the South State Tournament at McAdams High School.

McAdams used the friendly confines of its home gymnasium and made 12 3-pointers in a 64-58 victory against the East Oktibbeha Titans.

"They just had the shots fall their way," East Oktibbeha coach Barnett Robinson said.

The Bulldogs (19-12) continue their season against Thomastown tonight, while the Titans (12-17) had their season end.

Although disappointed by the loss, Barnett said his young team can be pleased with how far it advanced.

"I''m proud of what we accomplished, but I''m also kind of sad the season is over, especially for the seniors because tonight was their last night and they will never play high school basketball again," Robinson said. "I told them to keep their head up. People didn''t expect us to get this far, but we did pretty good."

East Oktibbeha has three seniors, five juniors, three sophomores, and two freshmen on its roster.

"We have a bright future," junior guard Doug Chandler said.

Chandler''s scoring helped the Titans take leads of 17-12 after the first quarter and 28-21 at halftime. He had nine of his team''s 11 points in the second quarter.

Chandler finished with 31 points, but his game started to leave him as the game progressed and McAdams got on a roll.

"I just told the team we had to work hard because they had a lot of shooters," Chandler said. "We had to shoot back, but somehow my shot wasn''t falling and they were hot. I was also trying to get my team more involved."

Jaroderick Teague hit 5 of 7 3-pointers in the third quarter for the Bulldogs as they worked to a 40-all tie.

"On the days he shows up, he shows up," McAdams coach Joe Garrett said of Teague, who had 22 points.

The Bulldogs outscored the Titans 24-18 in the fourth quarter on two 3-pointers by Alexander Mosley, another by Teague, and one by Jekele Snow (12 points).

"The boys started out slow but picked it up," Garrett said. "The last half of the year we''ve been pretty consistent with our shooting. We can shoot better and we hope to keep that up and finish at the Big House (Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson)."
