STARKVILLE — Dak Prescott will not be the only Mississippi State quarterback signee that garners attention on Saturday when No. 1 Mississippi State hosts the University of Tennessee-Martin.
On the other sideline, finishing up his collegiate career with the Skyhawks, will be former Bulldog Dylan Favre, a former Class 4A state champion in the Mississippi high school ranks who signed with MSU a year before Prescott.
After leading St. Stanislaus to a Class 4A title in 2009, Favre signed with MSU in February of 2010 and stayed two seasons in Starkville before transferring to Pearl River Community College, a path that eventually led him to UT-Martin. For the Skyhawks, Favre has started just one game this year, though he has played plenty of snaps as the Ut-Martin backup.
On Saturday, he will return to where he collegiate career began.
“He is a play maker,” said MSU coach Dan Mullen of Favre. “I know that. We always knew that when he was here. If you put him out there exciting things are going to happen. Some good and some bad. I do not know if it gives us much of an advantage. He is going to be used to this environment. He has played in this stadium and has been in that environment before.”
Favre, the nephew of NFL Hall of Famer Brett Favte, signed as part of Mullen’s first full recruiting class in Starkville and entered the university as teammates of MSU’s current class of fifth-year seniors, a group that maintains friendships with Favre to this day.
“Dylan is always going to be my guy,” said MSU tailback Nick Griffin. “We came in together, and we still talk a lot. It will be great to see him.”
Prescott, MSU’s current quarterback, echoed Griffin’s sentiments.
“He was my roommate during my freshman year,” said Prescott of Favre. “I talk to him all the time. It will be good to see him come back for this game.”
Favre, who plays behind Skyhawks’ quarterback Jarod Neal, has thrown for 498 yards and four touchdowns this season.
