IRVINE, Calif. — Former New Hope High School standout and Louisiana-Lafayette rising sophomore DJ Sanders is three games into her first international experience with the USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team.
Through three games at the World Cup of Softball X in Irvine, California, Sanders is 3-for-7 for the JWNT program, which is making its first appearance in the World Cup.
Sanders went 2-for-2 Monday in a 14-0 victory against Argentina in three and a half innings. She was 0-for-2 in a 4-1 loss to Canada on Tuesday. She was 1-for-3 in a 3-2 loss to the United States National Team.
The JWNT will round out play in the event with games today against Puerto Rico (6:30 p.m.), Friday against Venezuela, and Saturday against Mexico. The teams then will be seeded for their final games Sunday.
Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball shortstop DJ Sanders and the USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team (JWNT) are scheduled to begin international competition on Monday, June 29 at the World Cup of Softball.
After the World Cup, the JWNT will travel to Hillsboro, Oregon, for exhibition games July 7. The squad then will return to international competition at the WBSC Junior Women’s World Championship (JWWC) on Aug. 9-15 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex.
Sanders, who was a standout basketball and slow- and fast-pitch softball player at New Hope High, hit .290 as a freshman at ULL and started all 54 games. She scored 49 runs and had 40 hits, six doubles, four home runs, and 27 RBIs. She also had a .420 slugging percentage and a .408 on-base percentage and was 10-for-10 in stolen bases.
