FULTON — The No. 7 Copiah-Lincoln Community College scored 13 points in the fourth quarter Thursday night to rally for a 26-14 victory against Itawamba C.C. in the season opener for both teams.
Kwadra Griggs, of Greenwood, threw two touchdowns with less than three minutes remaining in the first half to give the Indians a 14-10 lead at halftime. He hit Dominic Walker with an 11-yard scoring pass and Dorian Gaston with a 23-yard touchdown pass.
But ICC didn’t score again as Co-Lin kicked three field goals in the second half and used a late touchdown to seal the deal.
n Mississippi Gulf Coast 40, Northeast Mississippi 23: At Booneville, A.J. Erdely had two touchdown passes to lead Gulf Coast in the season opener for both teams.
Erdely was 18 of 29 for 290 yards. Chris Robinson had touchdown runs of 2 and 8 yards for the winners.
Northeast Mississippi received strong efforts from several former local high school standouts. Former West Oktibbeha County High School standout Tiberias Lampkin paced the Tigers with 17 carries for 74 yards.
On defense, Mario Virges (West Point High) had three solo tackles, Jordyn Bowlin (Starkville) had two solo tackles (four overall), Woodrow Prince (West Point) has five solo tackles (six overall), Javontay Ellis (New Hope) had an assisted tackle), and Justin Williams (East Oktibbeha) had two solo tackles (three overall) and one sack.
n In other action, Jaquez Parks’ 3-yard touchdown run with 3 minutes, 26 seconds remaining helped give Hinds C.C. a 32-28 victory against Holmes C.C.
East Central C.C. returned an interception for a touchdown in the first quarter and scored on three-straight offensive possessions in the second quarter to build an early cushion en route to a 34-0 victory against Mississippi Delta C.C.
Pearl River C.C. also defeated Coahoma 32-6.
