STARKVILLE — Shay Bonner made four-of-four free throws in the final 15 seconds as the Starkville High School”s girls basketball team defeated rival West Point 60-53 on Tuesday night.
After the Lady Yellow Jackets (13-4) took leads of 12-10 after the first quarter and 24-21 at halftime, the Lady Green Wave wrestled the advantage away to their favor at 40-39 after the third quarter.
Bonner (12 points) made a basket with 1 minute and 20 seconds remaining in the game to break a 51-51 tie and then she made the free throws at the end to ice it.
Kala Williams led Starkville with 17 points, while Courtney Moore joined Bonner with 12 points. Moore had a double-double by adding 10 rebounds.
For West Point (10-6), Kelsei Ewings scored 20 points and Kourtney Crowley added 13 points.
n Starkville 89, West Point 48 (B): The Yellow Jackets ended their two-game losing streak in a big way.
After West Point held a 17-16 lead at the end of the first quarter, Starkville outscored its visitors 26-16 in the second quarter to secure a 42-33 halftime advantage.
Edward Townsel had 29 first-half points for the Yellow Jackets and finished with 34.
Starkville (16-2) carried the momentum of the second quarter into the second half and led 76-40 after the third quarter.
Also for Starkville, Southern Miss signee Rashad Perkins scored 14 points, Mike Brand scored 11 points and James Sharp scored 10 points. Perkins had a double-double by adding 12 rebounds and Townsel had seven assists.
Laken Ford scored 15 points for West Point and Garry Hughes chipped in 12 points.
n Noxubee County 64, Caledonia 42: At Caledonia, Daquarius Mallard had 17 points and Jevodkies Tate added 14 to help the Tigers beat the Confederates.
Cole Carter had 14 points, Curtis Fluker and Edmund Elizenberry each had 10, and Tyler Lowe had 10 rebounds for Caledonia (6-6, 0-2 district).
n Madison-Ridgeland Academy 59, Heritage Academy 41 (B): At Columbus, Cole Walker scored a team-high 14 points and Will West had 12 to lead the Patriots.
Hunter Brown added eight points for Heritage Academy.
n Madison-Ridgeland Academy 48, Heritage Academy 35 (G): At Columbus, Christibeth Nelson and Madison Ford had 14 and 13 points, respectively, to lead the Lady Patriots.
n Central Academy 48, Winona Christian 35 (G): At Winona, Alex Dawkins had 14 points and Corey Dawkins added 10 to lead the Lady Vikings.
Kendall Taylor added nine points and Lillian Lindsey had six for Central Academy.
n Pickens Academy 60, Lowndes Academy 33 (G): At Lowndesboro, Ala., the Lady Pirates were in control from start to finish in their AISA Class 2A, Region 2 game.
Pickens Academy (17-3, 9-0 region) built a 13-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter and led 29-15 at halftime and 49-20 after the third quarter.
Callie Minor had 20 points and 14 rebounds, Lincoln Pearson had 18 points and eight rebounds, Katie McKinsey had 14 points, and Catherine Johnson had eight rebounds and eight assists.
n Lowndes Academy 41, Pickens Academy 40 (B): At Lowndesboro, Ala., Christian Kilpatrick made a free throw with two seconds remaining to lift Lowndes Academy.
Kilpatrick finished with a game-high 20 points.
Michael Potts had 15 points and Jacob Acker and Casey Jones each had nine points for Pickens Academy (10-8).
n Pickens County 59, Hale County 52 (G): At Reform, Ala., Kevauna Sterling scored 19 points to lead three players in double figures and help Pickens County beat Hale County in a Class 2A, Area 4 game.
Also scoring in double figures for Pickens County (8-5, 3-2 area) were Marauna Sterling (17 points) and Mariah Gooden (14). Kelsey Stewart scored seven points and had 14 rebounds and seven steals for the Lady Tornadoes.
n Immanuel Christian 41, Calhoun Academy 31 (JVB): At Steens, the Rams won their seventh game in a row and handed Calhoun Academy its first loss of the season.
Immanuel (15-2) was led in scoring by Joel Meeks and K.C Cunningham with 12 points each and Josh Danzler with eight.
n Immanuel Christian 40, Calhoun Academy 36 (G): At Steens, the Lady Rams rallied in the second half for the win.
Immanuel outscored Calhoun Academy 10-8 in the third quarter and 13-9 in the fourth after trailing 19-17 at halftime.
Immanuel”s leading scorers were Bailey Edwards with 10 points, Nyki Baudoin with eight and Katy-Whitten Davidson with seven.
Immanuel also won the junior varsity girls game 43-24. The Lady Rams were led by Taylor Baudoin with 21 points, 14 rebounds, six steals and four assists and Kaitlyn Shriner with 18 points.
