SULLIGENT, Ala. — Sulligent High School racked up 440 yards of total offense to knock off Lamar County 56-24 in a Alabama High School Activities Association non-region prep football matchup played Friday night.
Sulligent (3-2) won its second straight and gave first-year coach Daniel Merchant his first victory against a county rival. The Blue Devils can complete the county sweep Oct. 29 at South Lamar.
Codarius Metcalfe got things started on the right note for Sulligent as he returned the opening kickoff back 80 yards for the score. Quarterback Camden Mcelmore then added an 11-yard rushing score and hit Duston Summerville for a 14-yard touchdown to build a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Sulligen eased into halftime with a 28-10 lead after Cordarius Metcalfe scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns on a 20-yard run.
In the second half, Cordarius Metcalfe scored on a 5-yard run. That was followed by rushing scores from Caleb Williams (32-yard run), Tyreke Metcalfe (48-yard run) and Marco Mastin (47-yard run). Williams also had a two-point conversion rush.
Sulligent ran 31 times for 392 yards, with Tyreke Metcalfe collecting 114 yards on four carries. Williams rushed 12 times for 68 yards, while Cordarius Metcalfe rushed nine times for 61 yards.
Both Cordarius Metcalfe and Camden Mcelmore completed a pass as Sulligent finished 2-of-2 passing for 48 yards. Summerville had both catches.
Lamar County (2-3) received a game-high 115 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Cullen Carter on 24 carries. Carter scored on runs of 3 and 4 yards. In the air, Carter was 10-of-21 passing for 108 yards with an interception. Mark Duncan also scored for the Bulldogs on a 48-yard run. Denver Gentle kicked a 29-yard field goal.
Lamar County finished with 348 yards of total offense.
Aliceville 30, Pickens County 0: At Reform, Alabama, the Yellow Jackets sent a statement by shutting out the Class 2A Tornadoes on the road.
Aliceville (4-2) held Pickens County to 64 yards of total offense and blew the contest open with 24 second-half points.
Quarterback Santiago Taylor completed 4-of-13 passes for 36 yards, with a 23-yard touchdown pass to Nick Spruill. On the ground, Syron Clark had seven rushes for 92 yards, with a touchdown run of 42 yards. Taylor also added a 1-yard rushing score.
On defense, Phillip Wilder had nine total tackles, while Qydarius Matthews had eight. Wilder also had an interception and two forced fumbles. The Yellow Jackets recored three safeties to build the 6-0 halftime lead.
South Lamar 56, Holy Spirit Catholic 0: At Millport, Alabama, the Stallions improved to 2-3 with the road win.
