JACKSON — Andreus Swanigan and Montario Montgomery rushed for two touchdowns Friday night to lead the Starkville High School football team to a 42-14 victory against Jackson Murrah in a Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A, Region 2 game.
Starkville (8-1, 5-0 region) built a 21-0 lead at halftime and a 35-0 lead after three quarters.
Nelson Jordan had a 21-yard fumble return for a touchdown to open the scoring. Lorenzo Dantzler forced the fumble. Montgomery scored on a 1-yard run and on a 20-yard run. Swanigan added a 2-yard touchdown run and a 1-yard scoring run. Avery Brown added a 6-yard touchdown for the Yellow Jackets.
n West Point 50, Saltillo 0; At West Point, the Green Wave dominated every phase en route to a Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A, Region 1 victory.
Sophomore running back Chris Calvert rushed for 212 yards on 10 carries and four touchdowns. The reigning Commercial Dispatch Prep Player of the Week scored touchdowns of 38, 28, 20, and 76 yards — all in the first half as the Green Wave (7-2, 4-1) led 36-0 at halftime.
“I don’t think about big plays. I just go out there and do what I can to help the team,” Calvert said. “I run hard and do whatever the coaches tell me to do.”
West Point rushed for 412 yards.
Junior quarterback Dmarrio Edwards rushed for a 13-yard touchdown. He completed both passes he threw for 39 yards.
Tony Rush tackled Saltillo’s Dontell Young in the end zone for a safety and an 8-0 Green Wave lead midway through the first quarter.
Tavores Chandler scored a touchdown on a 37-yard interception return in the third quarter, while Jamario Bell capped the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
West Point’s defense didn’t allow a first down until midway through the second quarter, and only allowed 153 yards of offense.
Saltillo dropped to 0-9 and 0-4.
West Point will travel to New Hope next week for another region game.
n West Lowndes 36, Hamilton 7: At Hamilton, Junior quarterback Lemerrius Fair threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another to help the Panthers (6-4, 5-1) beat the Lions (1-7, 1-5) in a MHSAA Class 1A, Region 1 game.
The win helped West Lowndes clinch its first playoff appearance since 2012.
Fair was 6 of 9 for 213 yards. He connected with Marcus Farmer on touchdowns of 9 and 84 yards. He also hit Jerry Anderson for a 34-yard touchdown. He rushed for a 5-yard score.
Kemario Evans’ 2-yard touchdown accounted for the final margin.
Hamilton’s points came on a 38-yard pass from Todd Robinson to Austin Taylor. Denis Grignard’s kick was good.
