STARKVILLE — Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen said an announcement about the future of incoming freshman Jeffery Simmons with the program is expected to be made later in the week.
Mullen made the comment to reporters Tuesday at the Southeastern Conference meetings in Destin, Florida.
Early reports said Simmons had enrolled at MSU, which begins the first summer term Thursday. A team spokesperson didn’t comment on if the former Noxubee County High School standout has enrolled at MSU. He said, “MSU is close to a resolution, but we still have some things to work out.”
Simmons found himself in the public eye in March when a video surfaced allegedly showing him striking a woman repeatedly at Mayfair Apartments on March 24. He was arrested by Macon City Police and charged with simple assault and disturbing the peace — both misdemeanors.
Simmons made his initial appearance at Macon Municipal Court on May 10, but he was granted a continuance due to a discrepancy in the amount of restitution the alleged victim, Sophia Taylor, is seeking. He is expected back in court June 14.
The five-star defensive lineman is the top signee in MSU’s Class of 2016. He helped Noxubee County High win its second-consecutive Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A State championship last December.
Mullen said in the spring he wanted to wait for all the information on Simmons to come to light before making a decision.
