ORRVILLE, Ala. — The Aliceville High School football team defeated Keith 48-8 Friday night to win its Alabama High School Activities Association Class 2A, Region 4 opener.
Jamar Richardson had two rushing touchdowns to lead Aliceville, which led 28-0 at halftime. Richardson paced the defensive effort with 10 tackles and an interception.
DeMontez Hinton also had two scores for the Yellow Jackets. Santiago Taylor hit Javon Phillips for a passing touchdown and added a rushing score. Nicquavious Craig had the other score for the Yellow Jackets.
Aliceville (1-2, 1-0 region) will play host to Marion (0-3, 0-1) in another region game Friday night.
n Lamar County 21, Phil
Campbell 19: At Vernon, Alabama, the Bulldogs picked up a hard-fought victory at home in their AHSAA Class 2A, Region 8 opener.
The Bulldogs built a 21-6 halftime lead but had to hang on. Lamar County had 228 yards of total offense and played turnover-free ball.
Sophomore Ric Rogers was 3 of 6 for 39 yards. Sophomore Isaac Whittle had 16 carries for 123 yards. Bo Spencer had 15 rushes for 66 yards. Spencer and Rogers had rushing touchdowns.
The other score was a 75-yard kickoff return by Spencer.
Joseph White led the defense with 15 tackles. Jon Kilpatrick had 11. Spencer added two interceptions and two pass breakups.
Lamar County (1-2, 1-0 region) will play Friday at Mars Hill Bible (1-1, 0-1) in another region game.
n Sheffield 28, Sulligent 25: At Sheffield, Alabama, the Blue Devils fell in another AHSAA Class 2A, Region 8 thriller.
Both teams had four touchdowns. Sulligent couldn’t grab victory thanks in part to three missed conversion attempts. Sheffield held a 14-13 halftime lead after the teams combined for four second-quarter touchdowns. The same thing happened in the fourth quarter, when again each team scored twice.
Sulligent grabbed a 25-22 lead with 2 minutes, 28 seconds remaining on a 2-yard run by Ethan Carter. Sheffield answered one minute later with Malik Smith hit Donovan Goodwin for a game-winning 28-yard touchdown. Smith threw four touchdowns.
Sulligent had 376 yards of total offense. Carter led the ground game with 18 rushes for 112 yards and a touchdown. Tyreke Metcalfe added 13 rushes for 62 yards. Carter, Metcalfe, and Devin Burnett had rushing touchdowns.
C.J. McLemore was 8 of 13 for 131 yards and a touchdown. He also had an interception. Tito Gilmore had two catches for 46 yards and a touchdown. Marco Mastin had two catches for 37 yards, while Hayden Nolen had two catches for 31 yards.
Sulligent (1-2, 0-1 region) is open Friday night. It will play host to Phil Campbell (1-2, 0-1) on Sept. 16.
n Hubbertville 24, South Lamar 14: At Millport, Alabama, the Stallions came up short in their AHSAA Class 1A, Region 5 opener.
Dax Benton rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns to lead Hubbertville. Benton scored on runs of 54 and 11 yards. He also kicked a 35-yard field goal.
South Lamar scored on a 6-yard run by Austin Vice and a 2-yard run by Noah Dismukes.
Ryan Brubaker had a 64-yard interception return in the third quarter to give the Lions the lead for good. Brubaker had three turnovers (two interceptions and a fumble recovery).
Garrett Trull had 10 rushes for 50 yards for the Stallions. Austin Keasler had a team-high 10 tackles and a fumble recovery for South Lamar.
South Lamar (1-2, 0-1 region) will play Friday at Berry (3-0, 1-0) in another region game.
n Pickens County 59, Holy Spirit Catholic 0: At Reform, Alabama, the Tornadoes had another blowout victory in their Class 1A, Region 5 opener.
Pickens County has outscored two opponents this season, 111-0.
Pickens County (2-0, 1-0 region) will play host to Marion County (0-2, 0-0) in another region game Friday night.
n Pickens Academy 19, Patrician Academy 10: At Butler, Alabama, Riley Harcrow had the go-ahead touchdown run in the second quarter and another rushing score in the fourth quarter that helped the Pirates improve to 2-0.
Harcrow scored on a 2-yard run to give Pickens Academy a 12-0 lead. He added a 28-yard run to help seal the deal. Harcrow paced the Pirates with 15 carries for 69 yards. He also had 12 tackles to lead the defense.
Hamner Allen’s 6-yard touchdown pass to Grady McGlawn rounded out the Pirates’ scoring. Allen was 5 of 6 for 98 yards passing.
Pickens Academy had 33 carries for 141 yards. Will Jones added 15 carries for 58 yards as part of a balanced attack.
John Bradley Seymer had 13 tackles, and McGlawn added two sacks as part of a defensive effort that shut out Patrician Academy in the second half.
