THORSBY, Ala. — The Aliceville High School football team wrapped up the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 2A, Region 4 championship Friday night with a 51-7 victory against Thorsby.
By wrapping up the region’s top spot, the Yellow Jackets will host a first-round playoff game Nov. 4.
Aliceville (6-2, 5-0 region) ran for 270 yards and built a 44-0 halftime lead.
Nicquavious Craig began the scoring with a 15-yard run. Craig then caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Santiago Taylor. The other scores in the first quarter belonged to Jamar Richardson on runs of 18 and 45 yards.
In the second quarter, DeMontez Hinton ripped off a 94-yard run, while Taylor hit Omar Owens for a 35-yard touchdown. Javon Phillips added a 60-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Hinton had two rushes for 136 yards, while Richardson and Phillips had two carries for 63 yards apiece. Taylor completed all four pass attempts for 118 yards. Craig had two receptions for 63 yards.
Deonte Taylor had 10 tackles, while Albert Wells had nine. Taylor had five tackles for loss.
Aliceville will play host to Greene County (3-4) in non-region play Friday night.
n Sulligent 42, Hatton 39: At Sulligent,
Alabama, the Blue Devils clinched a playoff berth in AHSAA Class 2A, Region 8 with another dramatic victory.
Sulligent (4-3, 3-1 region) built a 27-13 halftime lead and had to survive a late rally.
For Sulligent, Marco Mastin ran for 174 yards, with a 65-yard touchdown run. Ethan Carter ran for 118 yards, with a 5-yard touchdown run. Devin Burnett ran for 91 yards, with touchdown runs of 39 and 2 yards.
Lee Colvin scored on an 8-yard run and C.J. McLemore threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Gilmore.
Sulligent will play Friday at Red Bay (5-2, 2-2) in region action.
n In other Class 2A, Region 8 news, Lamar County (5-2, 4-0) had an open date. The Bulldogs are out of region play Friday night for a game at Sheffield (7-1).
n Pickens County 26, South Lamar 13: At Millport, Alabama, the Tornadoes reigned supreme in a battle for the AHSAA Class 1A, Region 5 lead.
Pickens County improved to 5-2 and 4-0 in region play. The Tornadoes have clinched a first-round playoff game at home Nov. 4. South Lamar fell to 5-3 and 3-2 in the region. The Stallions can clinch a playoff berth with one more win or one more Marion County loss.
Pickens County will play host to Hubbertville (6-0, 4-0) Friday for the region title. South Lamar will play Friday night at Brilliant (0-7, 0-4) in region play.
Pickens County erased a 13-12 deficit by scoring two touchdowns in the final three minutes. Zach Thomas scored on a 7-yard run, while Kareem Spruill put the game away with a 70-yard interception return in the final minute.
For South Lamar, Noah Dismukes hit Jarrett Bryan for a 45-yard touchdown with 4 minutes, 29 seconds left in the game.
After a scoreless first half, Pickens County built a 12-0 lead on 3-yard run by Bonner and 2-yard run by Thomas. The other score for the Stallions was an 8-yard run by Garrett Trull.
n Pickens Academy 22, Southern Academy 21: At Greensboro, Alabama, the Pirates stepped outside of region play to pick up the road win in Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) action.
Dylan Fondren led the way for Pickens Academy with nine rushes for 155 yards. Riley Harcrow added 19 rushes for 90 yards and also caught a 90-yard touchdown pass.
Harcrow had 18 tackles, while John Bradley Seymer added 11.
Pickens Academy (4-3, 0-2 region) will play Friday night at Jackson Academy (4-4, 1-2 region) in Class AA, Region 2 play.
