ALICEVILLE, Ala. — The Aliceville High School football team scored on its final four possessions Friday night to pull out a 52-44 victory against Elba in the quarterfinals of the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 2A playoffs.
Aliceville (13-1) won its 12th-straight game and will play at G.W. Long (12-0) in the semifinals Friday night. The winner of that game will advance to the Class 2A State title game at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Elba (10-3) was the reigning state champion.
Aliceville had 459 yards and 25 first downs. On the defense, the Yellow Jackets only allowed 300 yards and forced three turnovers.
DeMontez Hinton had 25 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown. Javon Phillips ran seven times for 94 yards and a touchdown. Nicquavious Craig added seven rushes for 79 yards and a touchdown. Deonte Taylor scored twice and had 10 rushes for 69 yards.
Santiago Taylor was 3 of 6 for 61 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown to Taylor and a 16-yard touchdown to Craig. Taylor also ran for four two-point conversions.
Nathaniel Latham led the defense with five tackles. Taylor had two fumble recoveries and a sack, while Latham also had a fumble recovery.
n Pickens County 48, Decatur Heritage 12: At Trinity, Alabama, Caleb Bonner ran for three touchdowns Friday night to lead the Tornadoes in the quarterfinals of the AHSAA Class 1A playoffs.
Pickens County (10-3) will play host to Addison (13-0), which defeated Hubbertville 30-20, next week in the Class 1A State semifinals. The winners will play at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1 at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Bonner had two 5-yard touchdown runs in the first quarter to help the Tornadoes build a 29-0 lead. Zach Thomas hit Demetrius Windham on a two-point conversion.
Kenneth Smith scored on a 1-yard run before Thomas threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Elliott Petty. Mark Condra threw to Bonner for a conversion, while Thomas kicked an extra point.
Decatur Heritage (10-3) cut the deficit to 29-12 at halftime, but Pickens County pulled away in the second half thanks to quarterback Zach Thomas, who scored on a 25-yard run in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Thomas hit Petty on a 27-yard score. Bonner added a 10-yard run to close the scoring. Thomas hit another extra point.
