EUGENE, Ore. – After a pair of one-run contests to begin the series, the series finale was no different as the Mississippi State baseball team fell 6-5 at Oregon in 11 innings.
Jake Mangum extended his career-long hit streak to 25 games with a single in the third and was 4-for-6 with a double and an RBI on the day. Ryan Gridley now has an eight-game hit streak after going collecting three hits. Brent Rooker, Luke Alexander and Hunter Stovall each had two hits. Elijah MacNamee led the Bulldogs with two RBI.
Oregon (6-4) raced out to an early lead with four runs in the second inning. Daniel Patzlaff hit a two-out, two-RBI single to right field that scored Braden Stutzman and Matthew Dyer. Then, Morgan McCullough reached on a throwing error that allowed Taylor Travess to score from third. Patzlaff scored the Ducks’ final run of the frame on a single by Kyle Kasser.
MSU (7-5) battled back with three runs with one out in the sixth. Mangum found home on a bases-loaded infield single by Rooker. MacNamee then drove in both Alexander and Gridley on a double to the wall in left-center field.
In the seventh, the Bulldogs took its first lead of the contest with two runs. Josh Lovelady led off with a hit-by-pitch and advanced to third on a single through the left side by Stovall. Mangum then drove in Lovelady with a double to left center field. Stovall then found home on a one-out single to center by Gridley.
The Ducks tied it up with a run in the eighth. Dyer was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a walk and then to third on a wild pitch. Tim Susnara then came off the bench as a pinch hitter and hit a sacrifice fly to right field in foul territory that allowed Dyer to score.
Oregon scored the winning run in the 11th inning on a one-out RBI single by Kasser that scored Carson Brashears, who pinch-ran for Patzlaff after he reached on a walk.
Oregon two-way freshman Kenyon Yovan (1-0) earned his first career victory in three shutout innings. He scattered four hits and struck out a team-high six batters.
Spencer Price (1-1) took the loss in relief. He tossed 2.1 innings and allowed one run on one hit and struck out a batter. Ryan Cyr pitched a career-best 5.2 innings in relief, striking out a career-high seven batters and allowing just one run on two hits for the Bulldogs.
