TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Jacory Brown rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown Thursday, and the Sweet Water High School football team piled up 283 yards rushing to beat Pickens County 20-6 in the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Class 1A State title game at the University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Brown scored on a 2-yard run and Jaylon Williamson added a 3-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to give Sweet Water (14-1) a 14-6 lead.
Pickens County (12-3) had a chance to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but quarterback Aljaron Edwards was hit and fumbled. Shamar Lewis recovered the fumble and returned it 64 yards for a 20-6 lead with 7 minutes, 55 seconds to play. The turnover was one of four Sweet Water forced.
The Bulldogs earned their 10th state title, and their first since 2010. The Tornadoes finished second for the second-straight season.
Jermaine Hill kicked field goals of 26 and 28 yards for Pickens County.
Edwards was 17-for-26 for 174 yards and two interceptions. He also was sacked three times. Clifford Morton was 3-for-5 for 59 yards. Elliott Petty had a game-high nine catches for 109 yards.
Sweet Water completed one pass for 50 yards. The Bulldogs ran the football 56 times.
Rikishi Cohen and Jah-marien Latham led Pickens County with 10 tackles. Cohen had three solo tackles and a tackle for loss, while Latham had six solo tackles. Xyron Gilen had five solo stops and nine tackles, while Petty and had six solo tackles (eight and seven overall, respectively). Jacaurian Washington had a sack. Emanuel Wheeler had two quarterback hurries. Chadwick Wilson forced a fumble.
