Going into the Blue Devil Classic at Sulligent, Ala., the Lamar County High School baseball team hoped to build confidence for the rest of the season.
The Bulldogs accomplished that goal by winning two of three games, beating county rivals South Lamar and Sulligent.
Lamar County beat South Lamar 13-1 Friday and Sulligent 15-5 in six innings Saturday after going into the event with a 2-5 record.
"Our kids needed that confidence wise to know they can play with both programs," Lamar County coach Ken Adams said. "I wish we could keep the same focus when we play anybody else as we do when our kids play South Lamar or Sulligent. Every time we line up on the field or the court or whatever, wherever we''re at, our kids, and their kids too, step up and it''s always a good game."
Tyler Sprouse, a 14-year-old eighth-grader, was the winning pitcher against South Lamar and Sulligent.
Will White (double, two singles, three RBIs) and Matthew Norton (two hits, four RBIs) were Lamar County''s leading hitters against South Lamar.
Trevor Elliott (three hits, two RBIs), Lance Bobbitt (double, single, three RBIs), and Norton (one hit, three RBIs) paced the team against Sulligent.
Lamar County beat South Lamar to avenge two losses earlier in the season.
"Both games were good games," Adams said of Lamar County''s first two games against South Lamar. "The first game went into extra innings and we lost. It was a tough situation at the end.
"The other night (against South Lamar) we were just able to hit and make some plays."
Lamar County lost to Winfield 15-5 Monday and to Hamilton (Ala.) 10-0 Tuesday.
Adams went from being pleased with how the Bulldogs played against South Lamar and Sulligent to being upset with how they played the past two games.
"We played Winfield and went out there and played like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," Adams said. "We were Dr. Jekyll. We were giving them everything.
"I want to be consistent. That''s where I want our program to be. This past weekend (against South Lamar and Sulligent) I really thought moved us forward. We''ve just got to continue that."
Lamar County (4-9) will attempt to look more like the team that beat South Lamar and Sulligent when it plays today at Berry.
