WESSON — The Caledonia High School girls golf team won the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class II State Championship Tuesday at Wolf Hollow Golf Club.
Led by Avery Pool and Claudia Garcia, won the 13-team field with a combined score of 336. Sumrall finished second at 351, while Nettleton took third (358).
Nettleton’s Riley Mayhew was first medalist with a 145. She carded rounds of 72 and 73. Sumrall’s Tristan Cooley was second medalist with a 152 (76-76). Pool was third medalist at 159 (79-80).
Last season, Caledonia entered the Class II State Championship as the No. 1 seed for the first time. Pool shot rounds of 86 and a 79 for a 165, while Garcia carded rounds of 95 and 82 for a 177 and a team score of 342. Germantown won the title with a 324.
On Monday, Caledonia shot a 171 in the first round and led second-place Sumrall by two strokes. Pool shot an 80 in the second round Tuesday, while Garcia shot an 85, which was seven shots better than her first-round score.
The Caledonia High boys golf team will begin defense of its state title today at Elm Lake. New Hope also will compete in the two-day MHSAA Class 4A State meet, which will feature 19 teams.
Baseball
n Heritage Academy 11, Bayou Academy 1: At Cleveland, the Patriots (21-8) used a complete-game effort by Blayze Berry to win Game 1 of their best-of-three Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) Class AAA playoff series.
Game 2 will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Columbus. If needed, Game 2 will follow approximately 30 minutes after the first game.
Berry scattered six hits and struck out seven. He received plenty of support in a 12-hit attack. Heritage Academy also didn’t commit an error.
The Patriots broke the game open with two runs in the fifth inning, three in the sixth, and two in the seventh.
J.R. Lott led the way with three hits. Reid Huskison and Banks Hyde had two hits, while Noel Fisher and Seth Harris had two RBIs. Carter Putt also had an RBI.
n Tri-County Academy 14, Oak Hill Academy 8: At West Point, the Raiders (13-10) fell in Game 1 of their MAIS Class AA playoff series.
Game 2 will be at 4 p.m. Thursday in Flora. If needed, Game 2 will follow approximately 30 minutes after the first game.
The Rebels broke out to a 7-0 lead thanks to four runs in the first and three more in the second. First baseman Trace White had the big blow in the first with a three-run home run to left field off starting pitcher Ethan Bryan. Two of the runs Tri-County scored in the second came on wild pitches.
Jonah Caskey and Collins Brown had singles in the first for the Raiders.
Brown had a single and Bryan had an RBI in the third to help Oak Hill Academy get on the scoreboard. The Raiders also scored a run on a wild pitch.
Oak Hill Academy cut the deficit to 7-4 in the fourth with the help of one of six errors by Tri-County Academy. The Raiders left the bases loaded.
Tri-County Academy added to its lead with four runs in the fifth. Starting pitcher Dawson Walters had the big blow with a two-run home run.
Cameron Dill had a sacrifice fly and Dylan Scott had an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to help the Raiders close to 11-6.
Grayson Easterling made things a little more interesting in the sixth with a two-run single that hopped over the glove of the shortstop. The Raiders had a runner thrown out at home plate on the sequence that ended the inning with it 11-8.
The Rebels added three insurance runs in the seventh.
Easterling also had a bunt single for the Raiders, who had three errors.
