STARKVILLE -- Two Mississippi State Bulldogs earned Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors Monday.
Defensive end Montez Sweat and former Columbus High School standout Kylin Hill were recognized for their performances against Kansas State. Hill was the offensive player of the week after rushing for a career-high 211 yards on 17 carries. He ran for two touchdowns and also caught a touchdown pass.
Sweat was the defensive lineman of the week after tallying three tackles, two for a loss, and a sack in the 31-10 win. He is tied for the league lead in sacks (three) and tackles for a loss (five-and-a-half).
Hill also was one of the MSU coaching staff's players of the week. Linebackers Erroll Thompson and Alec Murphy joined him. Murphy was recognized for his work on special teams. Moorhead said the scout-team players of the week are running back Robert Rivers and defensive lineman Fabien Lovett; the academic staff selected freshman linebacker Nathaniel Watson and wide receiver Devonta "Whop" Jason as the student-athletes of the week.
Kentucky kickoff time
MSU will play Kentucky at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, in Lexington, Kentucky. The game will be broadcast on an ESPN network to be determined.
Moorhead said wide receiver Jesse Jackson and cornerback Jamal Peters are day to day with upper body injuries.
With starting safety Johnathan Abram out for the first half against Louisiana-Lafayette due to his targeting suspension, Moorhead said C.J. Morgan and Chris Rayford will take his spot.
Moorhead said he met Monday with running back Aeris Williams, who didn't get a snap at running back against Kansas State. Moorhead said playing time is based on performance in practice and other areas of the program throughout the week. He said Hill and Nick Gibson were the best in those regards. Moorhead said he expects better from Williams this week.
