FLORA — The 11th-seeded Oak Hill Academy football team saw its season end Friday with a 47-10 loss to Tri-County Academy in an opening-round game of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools (MAIS) Class AA playoffs.
“I am extremely proud of our football team” Oak Hill Academy coach Chris Craven said. “They battled through various kinds of adversity this season and finished the season well, giving themselves an opportunity in the playoffs.
“I am thankful for the hours of hard work and the effort they have given to the Oak Hill Academy football program. I am also very thankful to our administration, coaches, parents, patrons, and fans for all they do and the opportunities they give us to be successful.”
For Oak Hill Academy (5-6), Ash Cullum scored on a 1-yard run, while Grayson Easterling kicked a 30-yard field goal.
n Russell Christian 38, Victory Christian Academy 0: At Meridian, the Eagles (4-4) gained 182 yards and had four turnovers in their loss in the first round of the Christian Football Association playoffs.
Russell Christian, the No. 1 seed, will play Tabernacle, the No. 2 seed, which defeated East Memorial Christian Academy 48-26, in the CFA title game next week at Tuscaloosa Christian.
Victory Christian, which was the No. 4 seed, ends its season at 4-4.
A first drive that featured 25 yards in penalties set the tone for the Eagles. It gave Russell Christian a short field that it capitalized on. The Warriors (9-0) scored touchdowns on all of the Eagles’ turnovers.
Drake Clements led Victory Christian with nine tackles. Preston Kinard and Lahndon Townley had five. Townley had a fumble recovery.
Kinard had eight carries for 60 yards, including a long of 32 yards. Chris McDonald had nine carries for 42 yards. He also had five catches for 18 yards.
Jay Elmore led the Eagles with two catches for 32 yards.
Quarterback Brandon Moore was 9-for-12 for 55 yards and two interceptions.
n South Pontotoc 58, Aberdeen 38: At Pontotoc, the Bulldogs dropped their final game of the regular season in Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 3A, Region 4 play.
For Aberdeen (5-6, 2-3), Fred Fields ran for 138 yards and three touchdowns, while Brandan Williams ran for 114 yards and two more scores.
Aberdeen built a 24-14 lead midway through the second quarter. South Pontotoc (7-4, 2-3) recovered for a 29-24 halftime lead.
The Cougars put the game away with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Fields scored on runs of 29 and 47 yards, while Williams scored on runs of 7 and 43 yards.
In the second half, Fields added an 8-yard run before throwing a 48-yard pass to Jaquan Jones.
Aberdeen will play next week at Booneville in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs.
n In MHSAA Class 1A, Region 3 play, West Lowndes (2-8, 2-5) dropped a 38-12 decision at Ethel, while Hamilton (1-9, 0-7) fell 52-12 to Leake County at home.
West Alabama
n Patrician Academy 38, Pickens Academy 14: At Butler, Alabama, Jon Wesley Rye had 12 carries for 118 yards, including a 50 yard touchdown run Friday, but the Pirates (2-8) lost their Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) regular-season finale.
Chandler Box had 10 carries for 57 yards, including a 2 yard touchdown run.
John Michael Smith had 12 tackles to lead the defense. Clark Noland, Braden Davidson, and Rye had nine.
Pickens Academy will play next week at Crenshaw Academy in first round of the playoffs.
