CARROLLTON, Ala. — The Pickens Academy varsity cheerleaders attended the UCA/AISA Cheer camp in Montgomery, Ala., and returned home wiith the state championship trophy.
The cheerleaders prepared for the camp all summer that was held July 19-23. Their extra effort paid off when they earned the 2010- 2011 Alabama Independent School Association Varsity East Division state champion cheerleading squad, first place in the home pom competition, first place in extreme routine and second place in camp cheer awards.
“We are very proud of their accomplishments,” Pickens Academy headmaster Brach White said. “This group of young ladies is very talented academically and athletically. We appreciate the effort the squad and Rosamond Barnes put into their practices and we couldn”t be more pleased with the outcome. We look forward to watching them cheer our teams on to many victories.”
The cheerleaders are Caitlyn Barnes, Tess Cockrell, Grace Cox, Carleigh Fikes, Rebecca Gilliam, Elisabeth Hankins, Kaleigh Henders (head cheerleader), Luci Lewis (co-head cheerleader) , Katie McKinzey Marianna Pratt, Brittany Steen and Breanna Stone.
Henders was selected as a UCA/AISA All Star at the camp.
“Kaleigh is an outstanding cheerleader and leader,” Pickens Academy cheerleader sponsor Rosamond Barnes said. “I am very pleased to have been a part of this experience with her.”
Henders is the daughter of Jerry and Susie Harris, of Carrollton, and Jim Henders, of Dancy. She is the granddaughter of Shug and Lelia Henders, of Dancy, Mary Fuller, of Carrollton, and Flavious and Bessie Harris, of Gordo.
