SUNSHINE, Ala. — The Pickens County High School football team took a 34-0 halftime lead Friday and coasted to a victory by the same score at Sunshine”s homecoming contest in a Class 1A, Region 4A game.
The victory pushed the Tornadoes to third place in the region standings, followed by Pickens County”s next opponent, Holy Spirit, which lost 22-6 to John Essex.
The Tornadoes scored two touchdowns in the first quarter from running back Tim Simpson, who scored from 1 and 30 yards out. Demarko Hall converted both extra points, and Pickens County led 14-0 after one quarter.
Deion Curry tossed two scoring passes in the second quarter for the Tornadoes. He first hit Hall on a 13-yarder and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Lajuan Doss just before halftime.
Doss ran 49 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to end the game”s scoring.
Simpson led Pickens County in rushing with eight carries for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Hall added a touchdown on three pass receptions that combined for 79 yards. Doss added his 49-yard scoring run and 25 yards rushing.
Curry completed all five of his passes for 127 yards, and Devonte Simon had two of three completions for 25 yards.
- Parrish 46, South Lamar 26: At Millport, Ala., Parrish”s Austin Crowe rushed for 329 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Purple Tornadoes.
Jordan Smith completed 10 of 15 passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns for South Lamar.
Crowe scored on runs of 2, 11 and 44 yards. Jeremy Piper scored on runs of 1 and 3 yards for Parrish.
South Lamar”s Smith connected with Blake Mitchell for a 14-yard score and with Daniel Atkinson for touchdown passes of 48 and 19 yards.
South Lamar (2-6) will play host to Meek on Friday for homecoming.
n Lexington 25, Lamar County 20: At Lexington, Ala., Dylan Bunnell completed 14 of 24 passes for 249 yards and three touchdowns to defeat Lamar County to clinch at least third place in Class 2A, Region 8.
Lamar County led 14-12 at halftime after quarterback Eric Hudson scored on runs of 32 and 12 yards. Hudson had 223 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries.
Penalties and two turnovers kept Lamar County from rebounding. Lamar County travels to Hatton next Friday night.
- Aliceville 18, Greensboro 14: At Aliceville, Ala., Marquise Colvin carried 20 times for 207 yards and two touchdowns and Marquis Mayhew added 101 yards and one score on 19 totes as the Yellow Jackets” ground attack ate up yards and time for the victory.
Aliceville dominated the ground game with 304 rushing yards. Greensboro”s 314 offensive yardage included 288 yards passing.
In time of possession, Aliceville led 30:32 to 17:28.
In the first quarter, Greensboro took an 8-0 lead after Quintrell Watford passed to David Reeves for a 25-yard touchdown. The running attempt was good on the conversion.
Mayhew put Aliceville on the scoreboard in the second quarter with an 8-yard touchdown run.
In the third quarter, Colvin collected his first touchdown with a 4-yard run, capping off a 14-play, 67-yard drive. He went in from the 7 in the fourth quarter to give Aliceville an 18-8 lead after driving 54 yards in nine plays.
Greensboro tried to rally, but the points came too little and too late. With 15 seconds to play, Watford”s completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to end the scoring.
On defense, Mayhew led Aliceville with nine tackles, followed by Terry Mayhew with eight and Lawrence Scott with six.
- Pickens Academy 34, Lakeside 0: At Eufala, the Pirates used the 123-yard rushing performance of Josh Lewis to beat the Chiefs.
“They had a hard time stopping our option offense,” Pickens Academy coach John Gartman said.
Pirates quarterback Jacob Acker also threw for one touchdown and ran for two more.
Laglendelle Hughes of Pickens County was a leader on defense with six tackles.
