WEIR — After opening the season with six straight losses, the East Oktibbeha High School football team beat Weir 38-28 Friday for its third straight victory.
“I think the program has finally turned the corner,” Titans coach Randy Brooks said. “The players are starting to believe they can win. The kids celebrated all the way home.”
Quarterback Chris Hunter was East Oktibbeha”s offensive standout with five touchdowns. He scored two in his 189-yard rushing effort. He also passed for 146 yards and three more scores.
Kortland Petty had 111 yards in pass receiving yards with two touchdowns. Terrence Wright pulled in a 35-yard touchdown pass and added an interception.
East Oktibbeha led 22-20 at halftime.
“Once we got ahead, we started running the ball and using the clock,” Brooks said.
The Titans have an open date next week before going to Nanih Waiya on Oct. 29.
n East Webster 35, Hamilton 0: At Hamilton, Ledrick Patterson threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Wolverines.
Patterson hit Miguel Graham for a 48-yard scoring pass, then Timakis Bell dashed 29 yards for a touchdown to give the Wolverines a 12-0 first-quarter lead. East Webster went ahead 28-0 at intermission after Patterson ran in from 8 yards and threw to Josh Gladney for 18 yards. Extra-point runs by Bell and Patterson ended the first-half scoring.
Demetrius O”Briant ended East Webster”s scoring attack in the third quarter with a 47-yard run, followed by Bell”s PAT kick.
Bell rushed 11 times for 87 yards, and O”Briant carried four times for 93 yards.
On defense, Gladney made 11 tackles and had one fumble recovery for the Wolverines. Charles Guyton had seven tackles.
East Webster (9-0) will play host to J.Z. George on Friday for homecoming.
- Aberdeen 46, Mooreville 10: At Mooreville, Victor Hodges rushed for 165 yards on 17 carries for three touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs.
Hodges scored from 19 yards after Andre Jernigan recovered a Mooreville fumble on the first series. Mooreville answered with Matthew Pannell”s 19-yard field goal.
Hodges added two more touchdowns — 8 and 12 yards — to put the Bulldogs ahead 20-6 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Aberdeen went ahead 26-14 after Channing Ward caught a 14-yard touchdown from Desmond Jones..
Jones threw a 27-yard pass to Aaron McMillian for a 33-3 lead after Antonio Crayton”s kick. Chico Harrison scored from 24 yards out after Mooreville fumbled the ball away.
Mooreville in the fourth quarter after a high snap on an Aberdeen punt, and Josh Johnson scored from two yards out. Jonnie McMillian answered on the 70-yard kickoff return and a 46-10 lead.
Aberdeen”s Jones was 10-for-17 with 168 yards and two touchdowns. Mooreville quarterback Griff Loftis threw it 27 times, completing 11 for 114 yards.
Aberdeen (8-1) will play host to South Pontotoc on Friday.
n West Point 28, Lake Cormorant 27: At Lake Cormorant, the Green Wave”s defense stopped the Gators from converting a two-point PAT to preserve the victory.
West Point was leading 28-21 when Lake Cormorant scored on an 80-yard pass. The pass for the extra points was not converted.
West Point started the scoring in the second quarter on LaKenderic Thomas” 15-yard run. Lake Cormorant followed with a scoring run to tie the game 7-7.
Quarterback Justin Cox got West Point”s next with a 2-yard run. Lake Cormorant”s 25-yard touchdown pass before the half tied the game at 14.
In the third quarter, West Point scored twice. Thomas scored again from 2 yards, and Tez Pulliam had a 31-yard run. Lake Cormorant scored on a 25-yard touchdown pass.
West Point (8-1) will play host to Saltillo next week.
n Starkville Academy 35, Clarksdale Lee 23: At Clarksdale, Matt Ward rushed for 142 yard and two touchdowns as the Volunteers dominated the Colts.
Starkville started the scoring, ending an eight-play, 78-yard drive with a 45-yard scoring pass from Kyle Henson to Ryan McKell. McKell also rushed for a score.
Matt Ward added a 34-yard touchdown run for the Vols in the second quarter. The Colts scored on a 55-yard pass and a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter, but Will White”s 27-yard field goal for Starkville put the Volunteers up 17-9 at halftime.
In the third quarter, McKell scampered 49 yards for Starkville. Clarksdale, however, countered with a 58-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Starkville”s Ryan Mann scored from 12 yards.
Clarksdale opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run. Matt Ward ended the barrage with a 16-yard run.
Starkville dominated with 491 total yards — 410 rushing. On defense, Mann had 10 tackles, James Mapp had five, and Taylor Hunt, McKell, and Adam Crittenden each had four.
