The East Mississippi Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams won Thursday’s 2020-21 season openers against Northwest Mississippi Community College.
Jakorie Smith had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds as the Lions’ men earned a 77-74 win over the Rangers at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum in Scooba.
Danny Washington had 13 points and seven assists, Arecko Gipson Jr. had 13 points and six rebounds, and Blake Butler had 13 points.
Jenessa Souza had 14 points as the EMCC women earned a 78-53 win against Northwest in Senatobia, the Lions’ 13th straight MACJC North Division victory. Shakira Wilson had 12 points, DenAsia Mitchell had 10 points, and West Point product Ja’Mia Hollings had nine points and 13 rebounds.
The Lions finished with 16 steals against the Rangers.
EMCC is back in action against Itawamba Community College on Jan. 28. The Lions men will face the Indians at 5:30 p.m. in Fulton, and the women will host Itawamba at 6 p.m. in Scooba.
