GREENWOOD — The Pillow Academy football team built a 21-point lead Friday night en route to a 35-14 victory against Starkville Academy 35-14 in Mississippi Association of Independent Schools North AAA, Division II action.
Cayson Cox of Pillow Academy (8-2, 5-2 division) had scoring runs of 56 and 64 yards and two touchdown passes to help his team take a 28-7 lead after three quarters.
Starkville (3-8, 2-5) scored in the third quarter on a 5-yard run by Kyle Henson. The Volunteers added a 40-yard touchdown pass from Henson to Patrick Jones.
n South Leake 22, West Oktibbeha 13: At Maben, the Wolverines trailed 14-13 entering the fourth quarter before the Wildcats scored the decisive points in the MHSAA Class 1A, Region 3 game.
“I thought Jimmy Brown had a really good game for us tonight,” West Oktibbeha coach Adam Lowrey said. “He had 14 tackles.”
Lowrey also praised Aaron Brown (eight tackles, sack) and quarterback Von Smith (7 of 16, 133 yards, one touchdown, three interceptions).
Tiberias Lampkin scored from 2 yards on the sixth play of the game to account for West Oktibbeha”s first points.
“The interceptions really hurt us,” Lowrey said.
South Leake (8-2, 7-1 region) will play host to region leader Nanih Waiya (8-2, 8-0) on Friday to determine the region champion.
West Oktibbeha (6-4, 5-3 region) is tied with Noxapater (6-4, 5-3) for the region”s fourth and final playoff spot. The Timberwolves play at French Camp Academy (7-2, 6-2), which is in third place in the region. Noxapater plays host to Weir.
West Oktibbeha holds the tiebreaker against Noxapater based on a 32-26 victory on Sept. 10. A victory Friday would help it clinch a playoff position.
- West Point 26, Clarksdale 17: At Clarksdale, the Green Wave scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to clinch first place MHSAA Class 5A, Region 1.
West Point (9-1, 6-0 region) pulled ahead 19-17 on Justin Cox”s 45-yard touchdown run. Aries Williams put the game away with a 1-yard scoring run.
Clarksdale fell to 6-5.
- Winston Academy 41, Oak Hill Academy 7: At Louisville, the Patriots built a big lead en route to a victory that knocked the Raiders out of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class AA, District 2 playoffs.
The Raiders (3-8, 1-2 district) needed to beat the Patriots (6-4, 3-0) by seven points to clinch a playoff berth and by 15 points to win the district.
Tyler Sullivan threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more to account for all the Patriots” offense. Tyler threw touchdown passes to Austin Flake (24 yards), Zack Taylor (34 yards), and Tyler Golson (26 yards). He had two 2-yard touchdown runs.
Golson returned a punt 49 yards for the remaining points.
Oak Hill Academy scored in the fourth quarter on Bo Sanford”s 67-yard run.
- Aberdeen 34, Nettleton 7: At Nettleton, the Bulldogs completed an unbeaten run through MHSAA Class 3A, Region 2.
Aberdeen (10-1, 5-0 region) will begin preparations for a first-round home playoff game against Kossuth having scored 104 points in its past two games. It won 70-14 against South Pontotoc last week.
The Bulldogs led 34-0 after three quarters. Nettleton (3-8, 0-5) scored in the fourth quarter on a 15-yard pass from Dakota Cruber to Jamarcus Brandon.
Victor Hodges scored on runs of 4, 4, and 1 yards. A 27-yard run by Desmond Jones and a 29-yard interception return by Johnny Wilson added to the Bulldogs” offense.
Hodges rushed 15 times for 160 yards as Aberdeen collected four interceptions and four sacks.
Thursday
- Nanih Waiya 47, East Oktibbeha 6: At Nanih Waiya, the home team scored just about every way possible in their win against the Titans in a MHSAA Class 1A, Region 3 game.
Nanih Waiya (8-2, 8-0 region) scored on long runs (65 yards), intermediate runs (18 and 32 yards), and short runs (2 yards) and on a 50-yard interception return and on a safety.
Jamal Halbert caught a 40-yard touchdown pass for East Oktibbeha (3-7, 3-5).
