TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Trevor Releford scored 18 points to lead the University of Alabama men's basketball team to a 65-45 victory against Oakland University on Saturday in its final non-conference game of the regular season.
Standing at 6-foot-7, it isn't hard to find Columbus High School senior Devin Berry on the basketball court. Tupelo knew where Berry was when the teams met Friday night in Class 6A, Region 2 action. However, the Golden Wave couldn't prevent Berry from having his way. Another double-double by Berry (15 points, 12 rebounds) and a 13-0 run midway through the third quarter lifted the Falcons to a 42-37 victory.
With one of the state's premier players in the lineup, the Columbus High School girls basketball team has to get others players involved. After All-State guard Kiki Patterson scored 23 points in the first half Friday night, Tupelo made a defensive adjustment. The Lady Falcons then had to count on others to complete a 50-49 Class 6A, Region 2 victory.
STARKVILLE -- Starkville High School Athletic Director Stan Miller already sees a problem with the third annual Travis Outlaw Slam Dunk at The Hump Tournament, set for December. However, the event's organizer is happy to have it.

Michael Bradley isn't sure of everything that will happen in the future. But Bradley knows he won't take his next step as football coach at New Hope High School. The veteran coach announced this week he will step down after seven seasons as the football coach. Bradley informed his coaches of the news Wednesday and told his players Thursday.

The Dispatch's Large School Defensive Player of the Year, who led the Noxubee County High School football team to a undefeated season and a Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A state championship, gave a verbal commitment to the Golden Eagles on New Year's Day.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Mississippi State University women's basketball team found the going tough Thursday night in its Southeastern Conference opener. MSU struggled from the start in a 92-41 loss to Vanderbilt University at Memorial Gymnasium. The loss was the worst ever in a SEC opener for MSU. The previous worst loss was a 77-35 loss to No. 1 Auburn University on Jan. 11, 1989.
