ABERDEEN ó A championship basketball teamís competitive spirit must trickle down from the top. Nowhere was this spirit more evident Monday night than with Aberdeen High School girls basketball coach Cloyd Garth.
MACON ó A seven-point first-quarter deficit proved to be childís play for the Noxubee County High School girls basketball team. Those kind of leads evaporate quickly when you can press teams like the Lady Tigerettes. It also helps to have propulsion from guards Jeraldine Campbell and Shanteria Tate.
Kierra Jones was in a zone. Shooters know the place. When youíre there, your shooting stroke is perfect, the ball has the ideal rotation, and every shot you take is nothing but net. The Starkville High School girls basketball standout wasnít quite in that zone, although she did have two productive evenings last week at the Class 5A-Division 2 tournament at South Panola High School.
There is a competitive race at the top of the Southeastern Conferenceís Eastern Division. At 7-3, Kentucky and Tennessee were expected to compete for an Eastern Division title. But first-year coach Darrin Horn has helped South Carolina (7-3) become the surprise of the league.
The Mississippi State menís basketball team hasnít had the kind of start to the second half of the Southeastern Conference season it wanted. MSU opened SEC play with victories against Arkansas, Alabama, and Vanderbilt and finished the first half of the league slate 6-2. The second eight hasnít started so great for the Bulldogs.
A minor issue that kept Mississippi State signee Chad Bumphis from being eligible for nearly two months has been resolved. MSU asked the NCAA to reinstate Bumphis, a four-star wide receiver from Tupelo, after he was involved in a secondary rules violation with former football coach Sylvester Croom.
