STARKVILLE -- The Mississippi State women's basketball team received two shots of good news Monday night. On Monday morning, point guard Morgan William was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week. On Monday night, MSU learned it will play host to No. 17 West Virginia at 7 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals of the Preseason Women's National Invitation Tournament.
With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the No. 8 Ole Miss football team still has a lot of preseason goals within reach. If Ole Miss wins its final two games and Auburn beats Alabama, it will clinch a share of the Southeastern Conference Western Division and advance to the Southeastern Conference championship game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta for the first time.
STARKVILLE -- Don't try to tell Morgan William not to do something. It also has become quite apparent after two games that you better bring plenty of help if you're going to attempt to stop the freshman.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Nick Saban and his Alabama football players kept saying that being just outside the top four in the College Football Playoff rankings didn't really matter with big games remaining.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- With an inexperienced team starting its season, No. 7 Duke turned to its reliable leader and got a balanced effort to start the season. Elizabeth Williams had 17 points, 12 rebounds, and six blocked shots to lead the Blue Devils to a 90-40 win against Alabama on Sunday night.
OXFORD -- Senior Tia Faleru had 19 points Sunday to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for her career in the Ole Miss women's basketball team's 91-38 victory against Mississippi Valley State at Tad Smith Coliseum.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Alabama men's basketball team cruised to an 82-54 victory against Towson Tigers in its season opener Friday evening at Coleman Coliseum.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- On a day when MSU quarterback Dak Prescott couldn't overcome his early struggles and lead No. 1 Mississippi State to a comeback victory, it was No. 5 Alabama's quarterback who turned in a game-clinching performance in the fourth quarter. Senior Blake Sims, who has led Alabama to five-straight wins, carried his team to an emotional 25-20 win Saturday that puts it in the driver's seat for the Southeastern Conference's Western Division title.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- That feeling. In the moments after No. 1 Mississippi State's 25-20 loss at No. 5 Alabama on Saturday night, MSU quarterback Dak Prescott was peppered with questions about his performance, his team's mistakes, and his ability to bounce back from the Bulldogs' first defeat of the season.

OXFORD -- Cedrick Bowen's dunk with 0.1 seconds left in overtime lifted Charleston Southern to a 66-65 victory against Mississippi in the season opener for both teams. Bowen, who finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, followed a miss on a driving layup attempt by Saah Nimley. After a replay review, Bowen's athletic, two-handed dunk was ruled good. Ole Miss had its inbounds pass intercepted at the buzzer.
STARKVILLE -- Mississippi State fans have been waiting patiently for a day when the school's men's basketball team had depth again. While the Bulldogs played nine players and several newcomers, a trio of veterans led the way in a 66-56 win against Western Carolina in the season opener Friday night. It was MSU's 400th win all-time at Humphrey Coliseum.
STARKVILLE -- Victoria Vivians feels like she and her freshman teammates on the Mississippi State women's basketball team are well ahead of the curve.
STARKVILLE -- It's time to put the expectations to the test. The Mississippi State women's basketball team has been looking forward to a new campaign ever since it suffered a season-ending loss to South Florida in the quarterfinals of the Women's National Invitation Tournament on March 30. While the postseason run -- the program's first since a trip to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament in 2010 -- reflected the growth of the players in the second year under coach Vic Schaefer and his staff, the Bulldogs had even more to be excited about considering a talented recruiting class led by Victoria Vivians, the state's all-time leading high school scorer, was on its way.
