STARKVILLE — On the cusp of breaking into the NCAA Division I Top 25 softball rankings after a weekend of three consecutive victories in the Bulldog Round Robin, Mississippi State seemed poised to continue its winning ways Wednesday against the University of Southern Mississippi. The Golden Eagles had different plans.
STARKVILLE — The Mississippi State women’s basketball team isn’t the only squad feeling the urgency as February counts down to March. If MSU feels a tinge of anxiety being on the bubble for the NCAA tournament, coach Renee Ladner’s Ole Miss women’s basketball team has a host of butterflies as it enters the stretch run. The Rebels can quiet some of that uneasiness at 8 tonight (Fox Sports Net South) when they play host to Mississippi State at Tad Smith Coliseum.
STARKVILLE — Jarvis Varnado had a career night Wednesday for the Mississippi State men’s basketball team. It was nothing compared to what Tasmin Mitchell did for LSU. Varnado scored a career-high 31 points, but Mitchell had a career-high 41 to lead the Tigers to a 97-94 victory in double overtime in front of a crowd of 9,021 at Humphrey Coliseum.
Mississippi State point guard Dee Bost moved into elite status Monday. Bost learned from MSU officials he had become the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. He becomes the third second-time honoree of the award, joining Alabama’s JaMychal Green and Ole Miss’ Terrico White.
STARKVILLE — The Mississippi State Bulldogs take great pride in being back-to-back Southeastern Conference Western Division champions. Mississippi State’s 2008-09 basketball poster features junior guard Barry Stewart and junior center Jarvis Varnado holding the past two SEC Western Division championship trophies.
The Alabama Crimson Tide want to be able to deliver a knockout blow. It did not happen Thursday when Alabama lost to Vanderbilt 79-74 in Nashville, Tenn. After pulling to within 76-74 after a 3-point field goal by Andrew Steele with 3 minutes, 13 seconds left in the game, the Crimson Tide let the Commodores off the hook. Alabama (13-9, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) gets another opportunity for a road victory at noon today (WCBI) at LSU, and interim coach Philip Pearson wants his team to be ready in case another tight game develops.
Mississippi State senior forward Robin Porter is living up to her words. Last October at the Southeastern Conference Media Basketball Media Days in Birmingham, Ala., Porter talked about how Mississippi State senior guard Marneshia Richard kept her motivated.

STARKVILLE –– To a man who has given much to Mississippi State University for 50 years after his college basketball career ended, the school returned the favor to Bailey Howell on Saturday. Howell’s No. 52 jersey was retired at halftime of Mississippi State’s game against Arkansas. He is the first player in school history to have his jersey retired.
STARKVILLE -- Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen said the challenges of recruiting in the Southeastern Conference are real. Mullen, who was the offensive coordinator at the University of Florida before coming to MSU, said it is not easy to be one of the league’s 12 programs competing for the nation’s best prep and junior college prospects.
STARKVILLE — On a night in the Southeastern Conference when a coach and a player reached 1,000, the Mississippi State women’s basketball team was more than happy to finish No. 17. Alexis Rack scored a team-high 14 points and MSU made 13 of 14 free throws down the stretch Thursday to beat No. 20 Vanderbilt 66-61 before a crowd of 672 at Humphrey Coliseum.
Arkansas men’s basketball coach John Pelphrey knows it will take an outstanding effort out of his team at 2 p.m. Saturday (WCBI) to beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs at Humphrey Coliseum. Pelphrey has already witnessed what the Bulldogs can do when they’re not at their best. Mississippi State beat Arkansas 70-56 on Jan 10 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Delynn and Sue Burkhalter, of Columbus, wanted an improved view of the Mississippi State football games, so they decided to tackle a huge project.
