Dr. Kendall Dunkelberg, professor of English and director of Creative Writing at Mississippi University for Women, will discuss formal poetry, focusing on the sonnet, at the April 20 Friends of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library Table Talk program.
Dr. Dunkelberg has directed poetry and fiction workshops, among other courses, at MUW since 1994. In 2003 he was honored as the MUW Humanities faculty member of the year. A published poet since 1988 and a translator of both poetry and fiction, he is well-placed to examine the complex beauty of the sonnet, a 14-line poem that has challenged writers for well over 600 years.
“This talk will enable us to appreciate the incredible flexibility of such a formal structure — from the earliest 14th century practitioners to poets of our own time,” related Friends board member Jo Shumake.
Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for those wishing to bring their lunch and socialize before the program begins at noon. The Friends will serve iced tea.
Table Talk is presented each Wednesday in April at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library, 314 Seventh St. N. For more information on the series, contact the Friends at [email protected]
