Accomplished classical guitarist Michael Patilla and baritone Joseph Hopkins will combine their considerable talents for Canciones y Cuerdas — an evening of songs and strings — at the intimate Omnova Theater in the Rosenzweig Arts Center Friday, July 15. The Columbus Arts Council presentation will begin at 7 p.m.
Patilla, a Fulbright scholar and associate professor of music at Mississippi State University, has performed extensively worldwide. His credits include concerto soloist roles with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, the Eastman Chamber Orchestra, the Orquestra Filarmonia de Honduras and Red Mountain Chamber Orchestra.
In addition, he has been a featured performer at Piccolo Spoleto, City Stages, the Tennessee Guitar Festival, the Volos Winter Festival in Greece and Crescendo Hungary. Patilla, who holds a doctor of music degree from the Eastman School of Music, has served as a guest lecturer in the Department of Fine Arts at the National Autonomous University in Honduras.
Hopkins is dean of the School of the Arts at Samford University and professor of music. His performances include leading opera roles with the Operafestival di Roma in Rome, Italy, and the Dallas Lyric Opera, as well as concerts and recitals in the United States, Africa, Canada, Europe and Japan.
Both esteemed performers have released recordings. Hopkins” include “Canciones,” a collection of Spanish songs performed with guitarist Renato Butturi, “The Songs of Richard Faith,” a collaboration with the composer for Leyerle Publications, and contemporary Christian recordings with his wife, soprano Suzanne Hopkins.
The eclectic Columbus program will include selections by a wide variety of composers, both past and present.
