Members and associate members of the Mississippi Chapter of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge have established scholarships for direct descendants of Mississippi veterans of the World War II Battle of the Bulge, the Ardennes.
Descendants who are legal residents of the state and enroll at a community college or four-year university, public or private, are eligible to apply for a $1,000 scholarship, said James W. Hunt of Columbus, chair of the scholarship committee.
Application forms are available by contacting Hunt at 662-328-8959. Completed applications are due back by May 1, mailed to James W. Hunt, 804 10th Ave. N., Columbus, MS 39705.
Applicants must have a B average (high school or college). A written narrative about why he or she should be selected and a recommendation from a high school or college teacher are also elements of the application process.
Donations to the scholarship fund are welcome and will allow the VBOB chapter to assist more students. Those wishing to give a scholarship named for a special veteran may contribute $1,000 or more to honor their loved one. Donations should be sent to Mary Ellen Stanley, 230 Sweetwater Drive, Pearl, MS 39208, along with the name of the veteran and the unit served in.
The chapter is honored to be entrusted with contributions to distribute as scholarships that not only help worthy young people get an education but also remember veterans, Hunt shared.
Burton Fuller, Marydean Fuller, Dr. Robert Gilbert, Jane Hunt, Sarah Naugher, Joan Rhett, Mary Ellen Stanley and Fred Wicker also serve on the scholarship committee.
