Dr. Kim Whitehead, assistant professor of English and religious studies at Mississippi University for Women, was named Faculty Member of the Year at commencement ceremonies the weekend of May 9.
The Faculty Member of the Year Award, which includes an award amount of $1,000, is an honor bestowed upon the faculty member who, above all, values quality teaching. The individual selected is a symbol of The W’s highly regarded faculty.
MUW’s Star and Scepter Chapter of Mortar Board and the MUW Alumni Association, which provides a generous $1,000 award, jointly recognize the Faculty Member of the Year. A faculty portrait will be placed with other awardees’ photographs on the walls of Whitfield Hall.
During her time at The W, Whitehead has served as director of religious studies, co-directed the International Series of programs and severed as interim director of the Gordy Honors College. She has also been instrumental in creating opportunities and developing relationships between international students and The W. Over the years, Whitehead has been generous with her personal time by traveling and working with students outside the traditional classroom setting. In addition to her daily duties, Whitehead has served on the Undergraduate Curriculum Council, Academic Council, Administrative Council, the Enrollment Management Task Force, the Arts and Lecture Committee and served as the Title IX investigator.
Whitehead holds a doctorate of philosophy from Emory University with a specialization in 20th century American literature, feminist theory/criticism, religion and literature. She also graduated with a masters in divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and holds a bachelor of arts from Jacksonville State University.
