The Friends of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library opens its September Table Talk series Wednesday with a visit by author Carolyn Brown, who will introduce her award-winning biography of Eudora Welty, “A Daring Life,” and her recently-published work on Mississippi poet and novelist Margaret Walker, “Song of My Life.”
Both of Brown’s works are geared to the general reader who is interested in learning more about those who have made a significant contribution to the state’s cultural heritage. During her talk, Brown will explore the achievements of these two literary figures, noting the parallels and differences in their lives, careers and works. Brown, a native of North Carolina, moved to Jackson in 2006 where she became an adjunct professor at Millsaps College and began a serious exploration of Welty’s life. The resulting biography won the Mississippi Library Association Award for Nonfiction in 2013 and was the Mississippi Library Commission’s selection to represent the state of Mississippi at the National Book Festival in Washington in 2012.
“I recently heard Brown speak at the Mississippi Book Festival,” related Friends member Jo Shumake. “I think we’re in for a double treat as she walks us through the lives of two remarkable Mississippi women.”
Table Talks will be presented on Wednesdays in September at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library, 314 Seventh St. N. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for those wishing to bring their lunch and socialize before the program begins at noon. The Friends will serve iced tea.
