Buns are everywhere. Now before your mind drifts to one of those hot, cinnamon-sprinkled, icing-drizzled delights, just know that I am referring to men’s hair buns.
Perhaps the “man bun” as it’s being called was once only for rock stars or struggling artists, but hair buns are fast becoming a quintessential staple of coolness for men, well, some of us anyway. Genetics has a role to play, and let’s just say I won’t be able to coif myself into a bun anytime soon unless a wig is part of the deal. Everyone from my recent trendy waiter to celebrities like Colin Farrell, Jake Gyllenhaal and Bradley Cooper are proving that men can have good buns, too. Let’s keep our minds wholesome, shall we?
This 2015 trend is extremely versatile and can be worn in a myriad of styles to fit almost any occasion. Long hair is pulled up into a bun that sits atop the head for a sporty every day look, pulled back into a low bun for office chic, or loosely gathered for a hot casual vibe perfect for the weekend. All the gentlemen’s fashion books are cooing about the man bun. The glossy pages of GQ, Esquire and Vanity Fair are awash with male models donning suits, ties and buns.
Blogs are blowing up, social media is in a stir, and women are taking notice, all about the sex appeal of what appears to be the male fashion staple for fall 2015, and just in time for New York Fashion Week. Buns are blazing this season with the hairstyle that once might have labeled a guy unfocused, lazy or just unkempt with his appearance. Nowadays the mood has shifted to welcome the ease and confidence of the man bun.
Granted, not all are fans, and some women wish their men would stop stealing their blow dryers. In the upcoming movie “The Intern” starring Anne Hathaway and Robert DeNiro, Hathaway’s character laments that men’s style has fallen from formal to feeble in a generation, so I am doubting buns will be celebrated in that film.
I think it’s a swoon-worthy hairstyle trend that will be around for a few seasons and then gone, back to the rock stars and artists, but it will be au courant this fall, especially when it’s worn by Brad Pitt or almost any guy with a guitar. What do you think, girls?
