Church signs. We take them for granted in the daily landscape that zips past in our haste to get from Point A to B, and then C, D and E. Each one, however, is a source of communication — with existing church members, potential members and the community.
It’s fair to say that, from one coast of this country to the other, church signs are seen by millions of people every day. How many us invest a second or two to read what someone took the trouble to “post,” old-school? If we did it more, we might discover a bit of humor, as in these perennial favorites: “God didn’t create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes come close.” Or, “Whoever stole our AC units, keep one. It is hot where you are going.”
Perhaps we would come across some thoughtful perspectives, such as “Laziness and poverty are cousins.” Or, “Thanksgiving is not a day, it’s a lifestyle.”
Then again, some signs get right to the point with practical advice: “Honk if you love Jesus. Text while driving if you’re in a hurry to meet him.”
Yes, there is even a website, sayingsforchurchsigns.com, with weekly updates.
In December, Dispatch photographer Mark Wilson ventured out in Lowndes and Oktibbeha Counties to seek out a few church signs. This is what he found.
