Columbus artist Thomas Nawrocki currently has several pieces of his artwork on display at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library. The seven “Zig Zag Zig” prints are a continuing series of mixed-medium impressions produced in editions of three each.
Nawrocki conceived each image as a bas-relief sculpture, studio-based collage. “I am interpreting nature in its purest, abstract state, constructing a rhythm of pictorial lyricism using objects impregnated with fluorescent pigments,” he said.
The materials are then photographed in a black-light, illuminated environment. The photograph is then scanned onto a computer and manipulated and sharpened with Photoshop. Once printed, the multi-shaped image is placed between two sheets of clear Plexiglas and framed in zinc using both angular and curvilinear silhouettes.
The artist’s designs incorporate the beliefs from Eastern cultures that odd numbers are masculine and even numbers are feminine. Nawrocki utilized a single main shape with six leaves attached to the central structure, thus integrating both male and female elements into his compositions.
Nawrocki received his M.F.A. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is an Emeritus Professor of Printmaking and Fiber Arts-Weaving at Mississippi University for Women. He was selected the 2006 Visual Artist of the Year by the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters. His works have appeared in over 500 state, regional, national and international art competitions including The Milwaukee Art Center, Los Angeles Printmaking Society, the Pratt Graphic Art Center in New York, plus shows in Japan, Brazil, India, Germany and more.
The display will be up until July 28. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
