Mississippi University for Women’s Department of Health and Kinesiology will celebrate Women’s Health Awareness Week Oct. 4-6 with presentations that empower women to make healthier choices.
“As in past years, we are working with Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle to bring speakers who can address topics of interest. We have some excellent topics and excellent speakers lined up” said Dr. Irene Pintado, associate professor of health education at The W.
Dr. Katymay Malone and Dr. Caroline Payne-Purvis, both instructors in the Department of Health and Kinesiology, will present about “Private Parts: Condoms, Contraception, and Sexual Health,” Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. in the Pohl building, Room 201.
On Wednesday, Oct. 5, Dr. Hector Dox, a cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgeon with Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, will discuss “Women and Heart Disease” at a luncheon sponsored by The W and BMH-GT. The luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. in Pope Banquet Room on the second floor of the Hogarth Dining Center. Wednesday’s luncheon is free, but is a ticketed event with limited seating.

He completed a second residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Ohio State University Medical Center followed by a fellowship in Congenital Heart Surgery and Transplantation at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center.
Before moving to Columbus, Dr. Dox spent 17 years in private practice, most recently in Lima, Ohio, where he served as chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at San Rita’s Medical Center. He was also previously in private practice in Gulfport and Salina, Calif.

“It’s never too early or late to work toward being your ‘healthiest you,’ said Pintado. “We are fortunate to have the resources and expertise at The W, Baptist Hospital and other local agencies and organizations to make the ‘healthiest you’ an attainable goal.”
Light refreshments will be served at both the Tuesday and Thursday presentations. For more information and to reserve tickets for the luncheon, contact the Department of Health and Kinesiology at 662-329-7225.
