From rapid-fire fingerstyle rhythms to languid melodies, Tim Thompson and his son, Myles Thompson, are in sync. The father-son duo out of Nashville, Tennessee, will perform Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Columbus Arts Council’s Rosenzweig Arts Center in downtown Columbus.
Winner of the 2008 International Fingerstyle Championship, Tim Thompson is a singer/songwriter and session player in Nashville and has recorded a dozen albums (two of them Christmas music), plus two DVDs. He also shares his songwriting and guitar-playing expertise at colleges and events, including workshops by the Nashville Songwriters Association. He has been featured in guitar industry magazines and appeared with artists including Tommy Emmanuel, Spyro Gyra and Don Williams.
Myles, 21, began playing violin at age 5 and was studying music theory by the time he was 12. He also plays mandolin and is a prolific singer/songwriter.
The Thompson duo has performed at events including the Montreal Jazz Festival, the Chet Atkins Festival and Pagosa Folk ‘N Bluegrass Festival. In 2016, they have played multiple tour dates with Wynonna Judd’s Wynonna and the Big Noise.
“No one genre defines the Thompsons’ repertoire. It’s influenced by acoustic rock, pop, country, Celtic, jazz, classical and even funk,” said CAC Program Manager Beverly Norris, who saw Tim Thompson in concert several years ago. “The words that stuck in my head when I watched him were ‘wow’ and ‘phenomenal,’ even before Myles — a firebrand on fiddle and mandolin — was with him.”
