Rainwater Observatory in French Camp, about a hour’s drive from Columbus, offers a free public program called “Reflections of the Universe.” This updated presentation will be given Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. by Edwin Faughn, director of the observatory. The program is sponsored by 4-County Electric Power Association.
“Reflections of the Universe” focuses on the magnificent visual beauty and unimaginable vastness of the heavens, said Faughn. The educational and entertaining Power Point presentation is illustrated with numerous paintings by Faughn that have been featured in and on the covers of leading international space science magazines, books, exhibitions and planetarium productions such as Scientific American, Science News, Astronomy, Sky and Telescope, The Planetary Society’s Planetary Report magazine, Federal Express World Headquarters, Crew Training International, IAAA World Tour Exhibition: The Artist’s Universe and the world premiere of Titanic: The Exhibition.
As an artist and lecturer specializing in space sciences, Faughn has presented hundreds of programs to diverse audiences including universities, museums, schools, churches, civic groups, military installations, aviation firms, Scouts and other organizations. He also served almost 20 years as the art director for the Sharpe Planetarium of the Pink Palace Family of Museums in Memphis, Tennessee. His work has also been featured on the main KEPLER website of NASA’s Ames Research Center and can be seen at edwinfaughn.com.

After the presentation, weather permitting, an observing session will be held using Rainwater’s collection of powerful telescopes including the largest in Mississippi. The planetarium can be used if outdoor observing is clouded out.
