Those suffering from substance use disorders — alcohol and drug addiction — or individuals with a mental health diagnosis in the Golden Triangle have something Community Counseling Services believes they could add to their “gratitude list” — access to great behavioral health care through a variety of outlets and resources, said Martha Allen of CCS. No time is better to celebrate it than September, which is National Recovery Month.
Recovery House and The Pines and Cady Hill Recovery Center celebrate Recovery Month in order to encourage individuals with a mental and/or substance use disorder to seek treatment and achieve a healthy, happy life. The community is invited to a free, family-friendly event called “Rise for Recovery” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28 at the Stennis Lock and Dam East Bank Pavilion, off Wilkins-Wise Road in Columbus. A balloon release at 6:30 p.m. is followed by a free dinner.
“National Recovery Month is an opportunity for Recovery House and the Pines and Cady Hill to raise awareness about recovery and the challenges faced by those seeking treatment and those impacted by recovery,” stated Keenyn Wald, clinical coordinator for The Pines and Cady Hill Recovery Center.
It’s estimated that thousands of people are in recovery from substance use disorders in the Golden Triangle area. They are contributing to businesses, connecting with their families and giving back to the community, said Allen.
Mental and substance use disorders can affect anyone, including friends, neighbors, coworkers and family members. If more people are to join them on a path of recovery, action is needed — now. Too many people are still unaware that prevention works, treatment is effective and people recover, she added. The community must remain dedicated to the recovery process by helping people address these preventable and treatable conditions, and support individuals in recovery, as well as their family members.
