Approximately 20 organizations from around the state will be on Mississippi University for Women’s campus Tuesday as part of Campus Safety Day.
The purpose of the event is to make the college experience safer for students, explained Sirena Cantrell, dean of students, who noted that September is Campus Fire Safety Month for colleges and universities across the country.
Tables will be set up from 4-6 p.m. in the lot behind Peyton Hall. Organizations such as the Columbus Fire Department, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Mississippi Highway Patrol and The W’s own Health Center will be on hand. The organizations will provide safety information and some will offer giveaways.
Campus Safety Day will include a mock residence hall room burn “to show students just how quickly a fire can spread in a room,” Cantrell said. The demonstration will begin at 5:30 p.m. behind Peyton Hall.
Other demos will include fire extinguisher training, as well as a roll over simulator. The fire department will have its new truck on site and firefighter gear so students can experience what firefighters go through when preparing for the job.
