Mississippi University for Women’s Culinary Camp for Kids has a few openings remaining for seventh- through 12th-graders to attend the June 25-29 session of camp, according to Cheryl Brown of the university’s Culinary Arts Institute. Three sessions for younger grades are already full.
In each week’s session, campers learn in the setting of a professional commercial kitchen through demonstrations, lectures and hands-on work. Food safety, proper sanitation and kitchen safety are among topics covered and each day campers use practical techniques to produce the recipes of the day that can be easily replicated at home.
Culinary skills taught include reading, understanding and following a properly written recipe, organizational skills, food prep techniques, etiquette and clean-up skills and tasting new foods to develop a “flavor memory palate.”
A graduation ceremony for family on the final day of camp will showcase what campers have learned.
The cost per session is $250. For more information, contact the Culinary Arts Institute at 662-241-7472.
