When the school year came to a close in May, 87 rising fifth-graders from Earl Nash Elementary School in Macon and Virgil Jones Jr. Elementary School in Brooksville were told they had two books to read over the summer and present reports on when they returned for the fall semester. But when the students went to Noxubee County Library to check the books out, it was apparent the library did not have 87 copies of both books.
When Junior Auxiliary of Macon became aware of the shortage, the chapter immediately wanted to help. It purchased ample copies of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis and “Bridge to Terabithia” by Katherine Paterson for the students’ summer reading assignment.
Chapter president Hannah Martin Bostick said, “The ladies of Junior Auxiliary believe in the future of Noxubee County and know that reading is essential for success. We want Noxubee County to thrive, and we know that it begins with children. … Being able to purchase these books for the students is something we are extremely proud of. Placing the books in the hands of each upcoming fifth-grader will assist in their academic success, and it will be books they will always have from their childhood.”
