Worth the drive: Observatory to host 'The Sounds of Science'

Special to The Dispatch

Rainwater Observatory in French Camp will offer a free public program called "The Sounds of Science" at 7 p.m. Friday, March 8. Bob Swanson, astronomy instructor at Itawamba Community College in Tupelo, will be the speaker. This general interest, family-friendly program features space-themed songs as an entertaining and educational way of presenting astronomical concepts to kids of all ages.

Swanson has over a decade of experience teaching science at the high school and community college levels, in traditional classroom settings as well as online. He holds a master's degree in meteorology from Penn State University. From 1999 to 2005, he worked as a television weatherman, where he developed his unique style of blending education with entertainment. Leaving the camera behind, he worked four years in the print/online world as assistant weather editor at USA TODAY.

In summer 2018, Swanson and his family -- wife, Meredith, and three boys, D.J., Nate and Henry -- stormed the state, taking his "Music and Meteorology" show to over two dozen libraries throughout Mississippi. He plans more stops for his "Out of this World" astronomy show this summer. Learn more about his music and check his tour schedule at storminswanson.com.

After the presentation, weather permitting, an observing session will be held using some of Rainwater's collection of powerful telescopes. The planetarium can be used if the outdoor observing is clouded out. Rainwater Observatory and Planetarium is located one mile east of the Natchez Trace Parkway off Mississippi Highway 413 near the village of French Camp. Come early and enjoy Steak Night at the Council House Cafe, another support ministry of French Camp Academy.
