The Mississippi University for Women Galleries will host “Prismanic,” a capstone exhibition featuring the artwork of five graduating art majors, April 29-May 10.
The exhibition will feature artists Jacob Harkey of Baldwyn; Dorothy Lewter of Shelbyville, Kentucky; Lexie Maier of Brandon; Lauren Anderson of Brandon; and Courtney Harris of Columbus.
“Each exhibition is a showcase of five different student’s artworks as they prepare to transition into professional life. This is their senior capstone exhibition, showcasing each individual’s styles and skills they have learned at The W as students,” said Ian Childers, associate professor of art.
The title of the exhibition reflects the range of disciplines represented and their energy as they prepare for graduation. The exhibition reception will be held May 10 from 5-7 p.m.
Harkey, Dorothy and Lewter are all pursuing careers in graphic design. While this field is client-based, these seniors seek to satisfy their clients’ needs while maintaining their own individual styles. Lewter will show poster designs that feature hand-drawn compositions that are scanned and manipulated digitally to be screen printed by hand.
Maier’s style is contemporary but with a retro edge in her use of color and space throughout her work. Her branding systems and product designs are heavily process driven, as are Harkey’s brand designs. His work is set apart by the use of contrasting color forms and reliance on illustrations in branding systems.
Ceramist Anderson, from Etta, creates vessel-based animal forms that express her love of fantasy and the relic aesthetic. Totems representing mythology, fantasy and ritual represented with aged finishes will be showcased.
Harris will complete her degree in art education this spring. As part of the exhibition, she has created a pictorial family tree consisting of a series of graphically painted and brightly colored portraits of her family members.
“Prismanic” is in the Galleries of Summer Hall. The Galleries are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Department of Art and Design at 662-329-7341 or [email protected].
