A variety of decorative arts, antiques and original artwork will be showcased under one roof Thursday through Saturday when the Columbus Cultural Heritage Foundation presents the annual Art ‘n Antiques Show and Sale in the heart of downtown Columbus. A select group of dealers and artists from throughout the Southeast will fill the Columbus Arts Council’s Rosenzweig Arts Center for the free three-day event.
“It is an honor to once again host the Art ‘n Antiques Show and Sale in Columbus,” said Nancy Carpenter, executive director of the Foundation. “For over 35 years we have brought the finest in decorative art pieces and antiques to our community. This year we will host dealers from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama and Missouri. We hope you will join us.”
Festivities open with a complimentary wine and cheese preview party Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at 501 Main St. All are welcome.
Friday and Saturday
Friday morning begins with coffee and pastries at 8:30 a.m. and a 9 a.m. presentation by Angela Boudreaux of Antique Restoration Studio located in Gulf Breeze, Florida. A veteran of the show, Boudreaux restores and repairs porcelain, pottery, marble, alabaster, glass, crystal and objets d’art. She has restored several pieces for antebellum homes in Columbus. With 18 years restoration experience, Boudreaux will share with listeners some of the techniques involved as well as examples of “before” and “after.”
Boudreaux offers instruction in restoration and has also opened an online shop at myrestorationsupplies.com.
“I opened an online store because the products I use were so hard to find and other restorers were complaining they couldn’t find them. Now I distribute to other restorers and museums,” she said. Of the Columbus event, she added, “I love doing this show. I love what it supports and I love the town.”
Anyone needing repairs to damaged pieces is urged to bring items in to Boudreaux early in the Art ‘n Antiques Show and Sale. Many minor issues can be taken care of on site before the weekend show concludes. Other repairs may require longer.
Ruchelle Davis of Town & Country Vintage Linens and Textiles in Rome, Georgia, is returning for just her second Columbus show. She will bring an assortment of table and bed linens, monogrammed French lavender sachets and other textiles.
“This year I also have some 1930s and 1940s Christmas tablecloths,” said the dealer who specializes in pre-1960s linens. “Anything beyond that is too new,” she remarked. “This is a beautiful show, and everybody’s just so friendly and nice.”
Other decorative arts and antiques dealers expected include JoAnn Hathcock of Heritage Jewelry, Anthony Pettis of Vieux Carre Antiques, Dianne Currie of Dianne Currie Antiques, Chris Hammond of Poor Richard’s, Ralph Null with fine rugs, Fran Riddell of Fran Riddell Renaissance, Bill Sprott of Sprott Antiques, Roy Hayes of St. Louis Heritage and Jim West with Fleur de Lis Antiques.
Show and sale hours Friday at the arts center are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Hours Saturday are 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Carpenter said, “We are grateful to once again be partnering with the Columbus Arts Council. They have a wonderful facility and Jan Miller, the CAC executive director, has been most welcoming.”
Visual impact
Faye Asadi, Lee Gibson, Arthur Smith and Virginia Branch are among visual artists preparing work for the show and sale.
“I have some new pieces that I’ve been working on, acrylic florals on gallery-wrap canvas that I’ve literally just finished,” said Branch, of Columbus.
Arthur Smith of Fairhope, Alabama, will return to create portraits in pastels by appointment. After photographing each subject, Smith usually makes a preliminary drawing that evening, followed by a brief sitting the following day. He is then usually able to complete the portrait in about one and a half hours. He will remain in Columbus for several days after the show to continue his portraits.
“I can work with photos if people are not available, but I prefer taking a photograph, which I can do in a short amount of time,” he explained. Prices are $150 for one person, plus $60 for each added subject. To schedule an appointment with Smith, call 662-329-1191 or 662-574-2036.
