Campus Recreation at Mississippi University for Women has a plan to help people create a new exercise routine.
Even though COVID-19 (coronavirus) has changed nearly every facet of life, The W’s Campus Recreation team is using Facebook to deliver workout plans and strategies to address healthy eating habits and more to provide an outlet for those unable to access gyms or workout facilities.
Daily workout routines, suggestions on how to best manage your time and energy, ways to maintain a productive workspace and guidelines to stay healthy physically and mentally are available online at https://www.facebook.com/StarkRecCenter.
“COVID-19 has certainly changed the way we go about our daily lives for the time being,” said Jason Trufant, the director of athletics and recreation at The W. “It became increasingly evident that activity, both social and physical, was going to be compromised during this pandemic, and we as a staff felt like we needed to step up and help any way possible.
“Owls in the Nest” (#OwlsintheNest) is a healthy lifestyle initiative designed and coordinated by the department. The basic concept is to stay positive and active during this difficult time while the majority of us are at home without access to strength, conditioning and fitness resources.”
Trufant credits the entire Campus Recreation Department for its input in what he called a “team effort” to implement the initiative. He said “Owls in the Nest” will dip into the abundance of activities that people can utilize to remain physically and mentally fit. Members of the staff will post videos that will discuss a wide range of topics from healthy eating to foam rolling.
“Our goal in the Rec Center is to encourage and promote a healthy lifestyle,” Trufant said. “If this is the only way we can reach our population, then so be it. Our amazing staff has stepped up to the plate and hit a home run.”
To exercise caution, all classes at The W will be online and alternative instructional methods. The W also canceled all RecFitness and Functional Fitness classes and closed the Stark Recreation Center until further notice.
