Area residents and Main Street Columbus are gearing up for two November events at the Hitching Lot Farmer”s Market — the Giant Possum Town Yard Sale Nov. 6 and the Farmers” Market Holiday Bazaar Nov. 20.
Yard sale
The Hitching Lot Farmers” Market Committee announces the huge fall yard sale from 7 a.m. until noon. Usually held in the spring, a fall communitywide sale was added by the committee at the urging of participants.
The event, which serves as a fundraiser for the Farmers” Market through vendor fees and food sales, will complement the downtown Christmas Open House in Columbus Nov. 5-7. The banner weekend also includes the Decorative Arts and Preservation Forum presented by the Columbus Cultural Heritage Foundation, as well as several festive Saturday events.
More than 50 booths will offer items gleaned from attics, storage buildings and basements, just in time for seasonal bargain shopping. Breakfast and lunch will be available for purchase at the sale site at Second Avenue and Second Street North.
“This is a good way for families to do some fall cleaning in preparation for the holiday season. It”s also a great opportunity for civic groups to raise money for their designated charities, or for non-profits to fundraise,” said Main Street Columbus Executive Director Amber Brislin
Be a yard sale vendor
Limited vendor spaces are still available ($20) on a first-come, first-served basis. Each 10-by-26-foot space includes 4 feet of the sidewalk. Vendors will be assigned a booth number when a completed application and payment are submitted. No beverages or live animals may be sold.
The mission statement of the Hitching Lot Farmers” Market is to support the development of local sustainable farming by cultivating a vibrant farmers” market that serves as a community gathering place celebrating local farmers, food producers and artisans.
Holiday Market
On Saturday, Nov. 20, from 7 a.m.-10 a.m., the Farmers” Market will bustle with holiday cheer and the best of local produce and art, a children”s activity, and much more — just in time for the Thanksgiving table and gift-giving. All local artists and growers are encouraged to participate.
Regular Farmers” Market season guidelines apply for the Holiday Market. All produce, products and art must be locally grown, made or “conjured up.” Items must be sold by the grower or artist who produced the item.
To ensure a quality event, the Farmers” Market committee reserves the right to refuse any items that do not meet or follow guidelines.
All annual vendors may have their same space reserved at no additional fee, and daily vendors will be charged a $3 daily stall fee. All vendors must register by Nov. 12 to reserve their same space.
Return completed applications to the Main Street Columbus office at 107 Fifth St. N. by Nov. 12; or mail completed forms and fees to Main Street Columbus, P.O. Box 1062, Columbus, MS 39703.
