Dispatch Staff Report

Even without the hustle and bustle of a crowd gathered for the "flip of the switch," Monday's official lighting of the city Christmas tree will deliver its own brand of excitement -- virtually on Facebook Live.

Columbus Mayor Robert Smith and the "Grinch" will illuminate the tree at the west end of Main Street at 6 p.m., with Santa, Miz Claus and Santa's elf on hand. Families watching online will be glad to know that Santa will take requests from children via the live "chat" box for a half hour after the lighting.

"The 'Grinch' is sure to be jealous as Santa answers all those questions from kids who are anxiously awaiting Christmas Eve when Santa makes a special visit to their home," said Barbara Bigelow, executive director of Main Street Columbus.

The ceremony will take place at the Tombigbee Pedestrian Bridge where Main Street Columbus volunteers and Columbus Light & Water have decorated a large magnolia trees. Several hours of preparation are put into the decorations each year so that the lights will be fresh and bright, said Bigelow.

Traditional holiday singing will be provided by carolers from First Baptist Church.

"We turned to virtual this year to allow for the safety of our community," Bigelow explained. "Our plan is to return to our traditional tree lighting next year, providing kids' activities and lots of fun for the entire family."

This year's Christmas Tree Lighting is sponsored by the City of Columbus, Columbus Light & Water, Main Street Columbus, Prestige Event Rentals and WSMS 99.9.

Tune in to facebook.com/MainStreetColumbus to enjoy the fun Monday.

"Don't let the Grinch steal your Christmas," Bigelow said.
