MSU hires Johnson as new pitching coach

STARKVILLE -- Mississippi State introduced Wes Johnson as the new pitching coach Friday afternoon at the Leo Seal Football Complex.

Johnson takes over for Butch Thompson who was hired as the new coach at Auburn University.

MSU coach John Cohen also interviewed California State University at Fullerton assistant Jason Dietrich, but felt Johnson was the better fit.

"We're proud to have Wes Johnson," Cohen said. "What's really not a secret is the success he's had his entire baseball coaching career."

Johnson spent the last four seasons at Dallas Baptist University.

He doesn't have much time to get ready for the 2016 season that starts in mid-February, but he's ready to get down to business.

"I think this is the best place in the country to play college baseball. The support this university gives this place is phenomenal. Both of those things are very intriguing," Johnson said.
