Nitty Gritty Dirt Band/Asleep At The Wheel coming to Meridian

Jeff Clark

MERIDIAN -- --California and Texas are pretty far apart--geographically, politically, even culturally. But on Thursday, September 13, some excellent--and well known--musicians from both states will come together for what is sure to be an entertaining show at the MSU Riley Center. After a 6 p.m. pre-show party, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band along with Asleep at the Wheel will take the stage for a 7:30 p.m. concert.

Since the 60s, these guys from Long Beach, Calif., have been showcasing bluegrass, folk-rock, and country sounds using everything from a jug and a kazoo to an electric guitar. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is probably best known for their cover of "Mr. Bojangles" and their 1972 album, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." The members and instruments have changed many times over the past four decades, but their abilities to make award-winning music have stayed the same.

With nine Grammys under their belt, the members of Asleep at the Wheel have plenty to show for all their hard work since 1970. Founded in West Virginia, the country-western swing group eventually moved to Texas at the behest of Willie Nelson, who since has partnered with co-founder Ray Benson and the band for several successful projects.

Tickets are $40 and $34 at the MSU Riley Center box office, which is open from 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. Tickets can be purchased online HERE or by calling the box office at 601-696-2200.
